Dear Roommate,
We met under some unlikely circumstances and I sort of just showed up in your room one day with all my stuff ready to live here. We set up our rules and started living. It was smooth sailing from there. It was my first year here but not yours. You were a veteran at this stuff. You knew what was going on, but I was not entirely sure yet.
You have already gone through your freshmen year and did all the first time things I was doing so you watched me do some of the same things. You saw me get excited about things going my way and getting an A on that midterm. You saw me break down a couple of times, overwhelmed with college and being an adult. You watched me fix what went wrong and get it together. You watched me grow up. I have watched myself grow up in more ways than one and it has been so exciting for me. But you have watched me grow up more than anyone here. I am positive I am not the girl who showed up in your dorm that October day.
You’ve laughed with me and at me over some of the silly things that have happened this year. You’ve given me advice on things I may have struggled with and helped me when I needed it. You know when I am happy or angry. You watch me come home at the later hours of the night having finished that paper. You know when I’ve had a good day or not depending on if my music is being played out loud. You never mind if I do that, and I appreciate it so much. Thank you.
As we are nearing the end of the year, I want to say a few things to you if you do not mind. I want to wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors, you know what you want to achieve and you will do it. I have also watched you grow as well. I will not see you every day anymore, so try not to miss me too much. (I’m only joking, but not really at the same time.) If you see me on campus, say hi. You will always be my freshman roommate, and just because we do not live together anymore does not mean I will not say hi to you. But most of all, thank you. Thank you for watching me grow up even if you do not think you did. You were a homie when I needed you to be, and I cannot thank you enough.
As we move out of this room, it is bittersweet. I will miss this time period in my life a little. However, I am so excited for my second year of college. The adventure is just beginning, and I am so happy to be a part of it. I hope you are as excited about your new adventures as I am about mine. To end, I would just like to say thank you once again. You’ve been a good freshman year roommate, and I wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Dakota
