An Open Letter To My Old Friend

I never thought our friendship would become an old one.

Dear old friend,

I am sad we are not as close as we used to be but am happy about where we both are in life. Seeing your posts online always makes me smile, and its good to know that you are doing well. I know we never meant to stop talking to each other, but we both knew that our lives were going to take different paths. That doesn’t mean you don’t still cross my mind. I still remember all those old memories and dreams that we shared, and those crazy 2 a.m. adventures and late night talks. We did some crazy and wild things together. They are all great memories and I couldn’t be more thankful.

It’s funny, during high school and growing up, I never thought of our friendship would become an old one. I thought we were going to be friends forever, doing everything together. Remember when we planned each others weddings? And that one time we looked up apartment listings because we wanted to live together after college? Those all seem like a life-time away now. I hope you know I never meant to purposely push you away, life just started to sprint ahead of me and I had to run to catch up.

I remember every heart felt goodbye and gradation party that led up to our depart. How the summer dragged on in long endless days and warm nights. We were so excited to head off to the fun of college that we didn’t consider what it meant for our friendship. In the beginning we kept in touch easily, having late night phone calls and texting daily. College was so new and exciting we had so many stories to tell but soon that college life started to take over. We started making new friends, rushing into sororities and focusing on our studies. Our phone calls become rushed and our texts became short.

Now getting together is something that actually has to be planned. No more spontaneous adventures or all night drives. It was a sad realization but one that I understood. We both have huge plans for our lives and new dreams we want to follow. And being the friends that we are we wouldn’t do anything to hold each other back from those dreams.

As our lives have gotten busy with new adventures and people, our friendship grows stronger in a sense that we will never forget it. So my old friend, never doubt that I won’t still be here for you. You were a big part of my life, and will always hold a special place in my heart. If you ever wish to reminisce on the old times or talk about the new, I am only a phone call and text away, willing and ready to take your call.

With love,

Your old friend

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
