You're a pain in more ways than one.

An Open Letter To My Migraines

Dear Migraines,

I can't seem to figure you out. Every time I think I've found out why you have come to visit, the theory changes. Is it the amount of stress I'm under? Is it my time of the month? Did I not get enough sleep? Why must you appear out of nowhere when I am just trying to live my life? I don't have time to lock myself in my room and wait you out. I don't have time to isolate myself in the bathroom just in case I get too nauseous to handle. I'm certain that you do not serve any healthy purpose in my life. All you do is make me miss out on classes, social outings, and cause me oh so much pain. With you joining me, I can't enjoy everyday tasks. I can't even sit up without being in excruciating pain. My only option is to lie down in a cold, dark room and hope for the best. I really wish you would not visit me as often as you do. When you do, my head feels as if it is going to explode. Usually it is one side or the other, but in some cases you decide to attack my whole brain. You make every little noise sound like a herd of elephants running by. Any form of light feels like a car shining their brights in my eyes constantly.

The amount of pain relievers it takes to even dull you is just ridiculous. Speaking of pain relievers, it is hard to find one that actually works at all. Aleve? No. Tylenol? Nope. Excedrin? Uh-uh. I've even tried a prescription strength migraine medication, but it only makes me nauseous. I did find that the best thing to do is take Ibuprofen at first sight, which is quite funny to say because you blur it when you arrive. Driving becomes dangerous and texts become indecipherable. I practically lose one of my senses for at least fifteen minutes. Keeping my eyes open is utterly useless.

Why do you have to be so brutal? Sometimes if I'm lucky I can fall asleep before your pain fully sets in, but I'm not always so fortunate. I can toss and turn and toss and turn, but no matter what the pounding against my skull prevents it. When I wake up I look forward to feeling better, but you send in the migraine hangover. Who knew you could feel hungover without even drinking a drop of alcohol? The symptoms are usually only present for eight hours or less, but sometimes you stick around for days. I wish you would just go away forever.

When you finally go away I live in fear of you attacking again. Leaving the house becomes nerve-racking, because no one likes to throw up in public from pain. I always double- and triple-check to make sure I have some Ibuprofen just in case you decide to strike. So I guess what I'm trying to say to you is I don't need you in my life, and I'm begging you to leave for good.

Sincerely,

Brianna

P.S. I'm begging you, for real. Leave.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
