To My King,
Once upon a time, there was a grown man, a man of honor and respect. This man changed the lives of his four children, for he showed them the qualities of what it means to be a father and a leader.
Throughout his life, he preached the saying “Know who you are.” This quote allowed him to create such memorable experiences, all because he never lost sight of himself.
Never did I believe how powerful just four simple words could be; these words have kept me intact during the past three months of my stressful new chapter- college. Thank you for encouraging me to be confident and emphasizing the importance of just being me.
After living under a different roof for the past three months, it has really taught me to appreciate the little aspects that I never once realized- your unlimited wisdom, your consistent loyalty, your vast help.
As I stated before, a true King exhibits honor and respect. Yes, there are King’s that hold the authority of endless lands and weak people. But you, you are a King that we learn about in the Disney movies. These Kings resemble not only fathers, but also leaders. These Kings are father-like figures to any person that is emotionally lost, emotionally distraught. These Kings are men that we look up to for advice and guidance through good times and bad. These Kings are people who let their children shine in the spotlight, while they silently watch us reach success.
You told me that you would always be my protector, my savior. You told me that I could do absolutely anything I set my mind to. You told me not to follow my dreams, but to chase them.
I remember hearing only your voice in an audience of thousands of people. I remember you screaming different plays at me during a lacrosse game. I remember your distinct whistle in a crowd, the whistle that told me you were so proud of my accomplishments.
The night before I left for college you wanted to speak to me about your saying, that saying that stuck with you throughout all of your success. You ended our conversation with “Know who you are.” That was the last time I heard you say that in person since I have been at college. Those four words imprinted on my soul; I knew that from then on, I must remain the character that I have become in order to truthfully make you proud.
Thank you, Dad for your unconditional love, trust, honesty, and advice. Thank you for being you, for being the best father a girl could ask for. Thank you for bringing the King-like character from those Disney movies to life.
Once upon a time there was a King, and this King had a princess. The two did everything together; the princess relied on her King for guidance. The King made sure his princess never lost sight of who she was, or of who she strived to become. The King, the Queen, and their princess lived happily ever after.
Love,
Your Princess
