An Open Letter To My Favorite Teacher

An Open Letter To My Favorite Teacher
Dear Mrs. D,
I still remember the first day I walked into your class in the sixth grade. I really dreaded it. Being an extremely shy and awkward kid, I dreaded being noticed and so I sat in the back, trying to make myself as small as possible. During the discussion week, you would leave the platform to the students to discuss important issues and debate about them. While I had so much to say, I couldn't bring myself to say anything out of fear of being wrong, so I just sat back feeling defeated. You noticed. You decided to challenge me, and I hated it. I loathed how you moved me to the front of the class. I despised how you wouldn't accept my work, unless it was the best that I could do. I hated how you involved me in social clubs and activities. I hate you for always picking me to do class presentations and assigning me as the group leader for every class project we did. I hated you when you chose me as the representative of our school for the speech contest between the schools in our district. I hated you for always pushing me out of my comfort zone when all I wanted was to be invisible. I hated you because I thought you did all of those things out of hatred towards me, but I was wrong.

You didn't give up. You were patient and determined to show me that I could do it. The potential you saw in me far exceeded the potential I saw in myself. Your encouragement and persistence made me the person I am today, confident and always pushing myself to doing my absolute best.

I wish I could thank you in person. This letter doesn't even come close to expressing how grateful I am for you. I know for a fact that if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. You taught me hard work and dedication. You taught me that that I can achieve anything if I work hard and never give up. Good teachers are hard to find and you are, indeed, a great teacher. Your patience, enthusiasm and kindness are proof of that. So thank you Mrs. D. Thank you for your time and patience. Thank you for the times you stayed behind during lunch to help me with my homework when you didn't have to. Thank you for always motivating me and inspiring me to dream big. And most of all, thank you for inspiring me to believe in myself.

P.S: You've always been and will continue to be my most favorite teacher. I hope that someday my kids will also have such an inspiring and dedicated teacher like you.

With lots of love,
Maliha Ludin

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
