An Open Letter To My Future Self And Past Self
future self

Our generation is currently facing some critical life changes as they are soon approaching. A lot of us are either graduating college, getting married or are already in full-time job positions that may or may not make us happy. These life events can be so drastic, that sometimes you forget to just breathe and take it one step at a time. We are bombarded with social media, that we forgot what it is like to interact as human beings. We are in such a hurry to get the most amount of likes, or post that new selfie, and we forget the important things in life.

So here is a letter to my future self.

Life has a funny way of turning your life upside down, and you don't know how to handle it anymore. Let me begin by saying whatever you are going through right now, it will pass. You have learned that people come and go in your life, you also learn that sometimes the people you thought were the most important in your life are honestly only important to you right now and not in the future. You will get hurt, you will learn to make your walls higher and you will learn to not let anyone in. Remember if you do choose to make your walls higher, and exclude people out of your life; that sometimes, being on your own is better than leaning on someone. You probably have had your share of heartbreaks and your mental break downs.

You had nights that you didn't sleep but choose to cry, you had days that depression took over and you couldn't move. Those days passed, now you have to focus on your goals, take them slow, make sure you focus on what is important to you and not pleasing others. Take the time to breathe and remind yourself that you are a human being and not a machine—we all make mistakes. However, don't let one small mistake detour you from your goals. Keep your head high and keep on moving on. Life is a funny thing, but at the end, even on the darkest of nights, the sun comes out at some point.

Dear past self.

You are so focused on helping others and putting them first that you forget that being human is OK. Let yourself love, let yourself get hurt, but also take care of yourself. You have learned that people who mean the most to you struggle to tell you the truth. You have learned that the first boy you loved is not the love of your life, but at the end of the day, the only person you always had and always will have is yourself. Please remember the lessons life has provided you.

So what you failed one exam; do better on the next one. So what you are exhausted from school; don't worry, you only have a couple weeks to go. These things are part of life, but the only beautiful thing about all of this is that you are learning to move on, you are learning to build your walls higher, and you are learning to see who you trust and who you don't trust. Remember to breathe and enjoy yourself because you are only this young once; you will never have the same exact day of being the same age. Stop focusing on social media and trying to show who you are through that; just focus on yourself.

Just keep in mind that you are the only person you can be; there will never be anyone as special as you in this. The world may be cruel, and it may knock you down a few times, but no one has your back like you do. Be you, get your trust broken; you will see who you can depend on. Get your heart broken because you'll learn to be kinder. Get your hopes high, and you'll learn that sometimes you can't even meet your own expectations. Smile more because frowning makes you look old. Just be happy that the world has lessons to offer you so you can become a stronger person.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
