To Busy Bodies

Dear Busy Bodies,

Often times it is easy to lose yourself in the consistent cycle of responsibilities to uphold that are brought to you by work, school, family, activities, and everything in between. It seems as though there will never be enough hours in the day or the month or the year to do everything you want or plan to do. That road trip you’ve been planning to take gets pushed back, your favorite hobby is put off, or you even forget your best friend’s birthday (you can always thank God for Facebook). Simply put, life gets in the way most times and it can be hard to feel like you have control over it. It’s supremely important to take a step back and soak in your surroundings every once in a while, though. As cliche as it may seem, stop and smell the roses. It will honestly help you breathe a little bit deeper and think a little bit clearer.

The little things in life truly do matter and we often forget to appreciate them. You have the ability to crack open an eye and groan as the rays of sunlight pool across your face, how great is that? That the experience of a new day is upon you. You have someone out there who is looking forward to seeing your eyes light up when you speak about your passions and hear you laugh at the dumbest of all things. When you move to the slower lane, open your window and feel the rush of wind hit your cheek while blasting your favorite road trip worthy band. That feeling of infinity rushes over so quickly and I promise it's one of those most pleasantly vivid moments you’ll ever recollect. We are granted a limited number of days upon this planet: take advantage of every second. You are more than just a blur in a sea of people rushing to their next meeting or just another number.

Take that road trip you've always wanted to take. Keep track of your water intake and stay hydrated (it's so important to take care of your health). Write a letter to a loved one or your future self. Sit in the grass and let your toes wiggle in the dewy grass even if your pants get a little dirty. Take that run you've been promising yourself you would take. Scrapbook, bake, play chess or video games. Walk around your town, you might notice something that makes your little slice of the world stand out than any other place. Your human experience is willed by you and your decisions. Focusing on the importance of taking breaks from our busy lives can only improve the quality of our day and minds entirely. So, what will you take notice to on this fine day?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
