This week has been a big one for the history books.
After the Charleston shooting in South Carolina, Governor Nikki Haley has ordered the Confederate flag to be taken down immediately at the state capitol building. Not even a day later, Governor Robert Bentley of Alabama ordered the Confederate flags to be removed from the state capitol building in Montgomery.
Friday, The United States Supreme Court ruled to remove the ban on gay marriage in all 50 states. Not only does this mean men and women can marry whomever they choose, but they can also receive a marriage license in all 50 states. The government will then recognize the couple as married.
So, where do we go from here?
Here is the bottom line truth before going into detail on why you should believe what I’m writing: history was made. Twenty years from now, when your son or daughter comes home from school and tells you how they learned about marriage equality, you can tell them you were there when it happened.
If your son or daughter tells you they are gay, you can still walk them down the aisle and watch them marry the love of their life. You have witnessed history this week. Our generation has helped make changes in America, and continues to push to move forward rather than backwards.

It is incredible in the past ten years how significantly personal opinions have changed. Not only that, but our society is becoming more and more accepting of others not like ourselves. We have put down our differences, and already seen progress for a better tomorrow.
For those of you who think these changes are terrible, I am sorry to tell you, but it is time to move on. Our country is mocked around the world because of the lack of progress we have made with important issues. The only way we can continue to progress as a country is to let go of the past and continue to move forward. People who are close-minded hold our country back from growing.
As children, we are taught to learn from our mistakes. We are also taught to move on from them, and let them go. Sure, our mistakes are a part of our lives, and we can never take back what we said or did, but we can learn from them. We can become better people when we acknowledge our actions were wrong, and slowly continue to become the well-respected humans that we were born to be.
Isn’t that like our country? Shouldn’t we learn from the mistakes made in the past, and slowly grow back into the country our forefathers envisioned?
Believe and say what you wish, but history has been made, and you were a part of it. You can be thrilled at the decisions made this week, or you can be angered by the fact these changes are now occurring. This is not what you should take away. Take away the fact that this week will be discussed for the rest of existence. History books will add these as chapters for our children to learn, and form opinions about. Friends and families will be growing and learning how to get along with each other. A new chapter of progress will begin in this country, and you were a part of it.
You now have a clear memory of this week to store away in your mind. Smile because you aren’t just a part of history, you helped change history.
