America, Santa is disappointed in you. Very, very disappointed.
Okay, maybe Santa isn't. But I am. In fact, in the past few weeks, I have never been more disgusted with my country. This entire election has been a ride from start to finish, and, unlike the rest of this article may imply, I am not entirely pleased with the results. But then again, I wouldn't have been pleased either way. However, it is not the results that disgust me. It's people's reaction to them, but even more so, the back reaction to said reaction.
I am aware that I probably will not be well-received in writing this. I am a white, Protestant, moderately right-winged young woman attending a small, private Christian university. In short, I am one of the more privileged people on this planet - unless we want to talk about whether I can actually afford said university. According to what this country is supposed to believe, my opinion still matters. So here is my message to both sides of the backwash of this uproarious election.
To all of the Clinton supporters, I am sorry. I understand, you're probably very scared and angry right now, and you're feeling devastated. But I have news: Donald Trump is not the king of America. He is the president of America, and as such, there are checks and balances that will keep him in line if he even attempts to do anything dictatorial. Congress does not have to pass his laws. Congress can, if need be, impeach him. I don't believe gay marriage is going anywhere. I don't believe he can build a wall around our borders.
So relax. Please, not just for everyone's sanity, but for your blood pressure! There are systems in place that will keep him from making a complete mess of our country. Look at history, and you'll see that no one person ever brought a nation to its knees. It was always a series of incompetent leaders, led by one capitulating moment. And if you look at how long it took to get where we are now, it'll probably take about that long to backpedal from that entirely.
Also, to the people who are uprising closest to me in Portland? Stop. Seriously, just stop. The people whose windows you're breaking, whose streets you are rioting in, are innocent bystanders. It's not their fault Trump won. And, like it or not, he is going to be President now. No amount of smashing things by you and shouts of, "Not my President!" are going to change the fact that, um, if you call yourself an American, he kind of is your President come January. I'd stop joking about leaving the country and seriously consider it, if that's what you're going to claim.
Now, to those who are completely overjoyed at the results of this election: Stop gloating. Stop rubbing it in these people's face that your candidate won. He's not going to be a Savior. At the risk of sounding like I'm pushing my religion on you, only one person can do that, and that person is Jesus Christ. Donald Trump will not solve all of our problems. And those who didn't vote for him are not stupid. They are intelligent people who just hold different values than you do.
And, as stated earlier, they're devastated. They'd put all their hopes in Hillary Clinton becoming our President and are now dealing with the what-ifs. Once again, I don't believe Trump can do too much damage, but they're scared, okay? Visions of the apocalypse are clearly dancing through their heads.
These are your fellow human beings, your fellow Americans. When did we allow ourselves to be divided by race, gender, sexual orientation and something as stupid as political parties and forget that we are all American's, for goodness' sake?
It's not quite Christmas yet, people. There's still room on the nice list.
So get it together.
