Everyday, a new incident occurs in the news that seems to cause an uproar. An unarmed person was shot and killed, police officers are being targeted, more human beings are being discriminated against. I genuinely believe that as a society we are too socially advanced to continue to let these injustices happen. Whether you agree or not, I am so tired of these following issues. They occur way to often not to say anything.
I am tired of racism and religion discrimination.
I grew up in an extremely diverse area of New Jersey. I attended school with whites, blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, and Jews alike. At an early age, I was exposed to various types of cultures and religions. I learned that these are all unique and should be embraced. Almost all of my friends practice different religions. I was taught to judge someone based on how they treat others and not what they look like or believe in. With that being said, I just do not understand the continued racism that is harbored within our society. It has been so deeply institutionalized in every aspect of our society, for the sole purpose of not having the same color skin. We live in a world where the amount of melanin in your skin is far superior than the acts of your heart.
I am tired of sexism.
Being born with female genitalia or male genitalia does not define one’s ability to succeed in life. Every human being has the ability to reach their highest potential, defined by themselves and themselves alone. For thousands of years “The White Man” has been viewed as superior simply because he is white, and also a man. Somehow in 2016, people still hold these beliefs. The wage gap is a real thing, discrimination against women (or men) in the workplace is a real thing, intimidation of another sex is very much a thing. I am so tired of being defined by what lies between my legs. I reach my goals because I have the determination to do so, not because my vagina sets the limits for me.
I am tired of Islamaphobia.
One’s religion does not define their character or how they treat others. I have met plenty of people who practice Islam within my life. I have held conversations with Islamic people despite the media portraying them as “terrorists.” Their stereotypes do not bother me, or scare me, nor should they scare anyone else. The people society tells me to be afraid of are human beings just like I am. They go to school, have a family, and hang out with their friends, just like I do. They practice what they believe in, just like I do. I am afraid of terrorists, however, I am not afraid of those who may practice the same religion as a terrorist.
I am tired of the lack of problem-solving within our population.
If you do not vote, or contribute to society, please do not complain about it. Do not say “I’m voting for Donald Trump” if you cannot give me a valid reason why you are doing so. Voting is a right that was given to Americans from founders of this country. It is something many take for granted. They do not realize the power of their own rights. If you do not like something the police are doing in your town, vote for a new mayor, who will then elect a new police chief. If you do not like the policies passed by Congress, then elect new Senators and Representatives. If you complain about everything but do not go to the polls, then you are giving up your right to vote and giving up your voice to speak.
I am tired of people who live in fear.
As a white female, I will never know what it is like to be a minority. I will never understand what minorities go through on a daily basis in regards to racism and discrimination. But because I am human I recognize their struggle and can empathize with them. No one should be alienated for wearing skin. I do not like to see anyone struggle, regardless of who they are and where they came from. I empathize with victim’s families who have had to deal with the media misconstruing the way their loved one died. I empathize with police officer’s families and their departments who have lost an important person in the line of duty. I deeply feel their pain. I empathize with people who are terrified to walk on the streets because they fear for their lives. I empathize with officers who are afraid to go to work everyday. No one should live in fear. As a society we must use events happening in this country to learn and grow. How many lives are going to be lost before someone stands up to injustices happening every single day?
As a human, I feel it is my duty to do whatever I can to help the betterment of society. I will stand up for those who cannot, and be the voice for those who cannot seem to find their own. I live my life every day as a civil-servant doing my best to promote love and positivity within my world. I urge each and every one of my readers to do the same. Be the change you want to see in the world.
