I Am Not "Too Involved"

A letter to those who don't understand a busy schedule.

I'm a busy gal, but I don't mind it at all. My planner is filled with written in appointments, various class assignments, and tons of stickers. I'm the Kappa Delta Zeta Gamma Chapter Banner Co-Chair, Secretary Assistant, Carol of the Greeks Co-Chair, and a Set Leader. I am the lead of Millie in KD's production of Throughly Modern Millie for Greek Sings. I am a committee member of the Membership Engagement Team of the Student Alumni Board. I write for the Odyssey. I am a literacy tutor for the Volunteer Action Center and an advocate of childhood literacy and the Children's Miracle Network. I compete for Miss Arkansas. I am taking 16 hours of classes, and although I say I want to quit or drop out 100 times a day, I work my butt off to make sure I do everything perfectly.

So yes, I am involved, but don't you dare say that I am "too involved."

I've gotten that may times, and I don't appreciate it. Why do we think it's ok to diss others because they are passionate about things, are leaders, and strive to make not only the world, but themselves better each day through various opportunities? What is "too involved" and is there a happy medium between that and not being involved at all? I don't understand it, and I know many that don't as well.

I've always been extremely involved, even since the Student Council in 5th grade. I've constantly been busy to the point that when I finally have time to relax, I watch Netflix while doing an assignment or another project because I feel like i'm wasting my time. I don't see that as a negative quality at all, I see it as the best quality a person could possibly have.

I have learned to multi-task, to prioritize, to lead and to delegate, among other things. I have diversified myself through various groups of people, and that is something I will never be ashamed of. College is one of the last true opportunities you have to be extremely involved, seeing that once you enter the work place you have one job and one job only. Sure, you may have a family as well, but you're not growing or learning or changing things in the world. If you are, please let me know so I can learn from you because I am going to miss this craziness called college.

So, to some I am "too involved," but to myself, I am living my life and my potential to the fullest extent. Try it sometime, let me know how it goes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
