Everybody knows who Beyoncé is. She has one of the largest followings in the world. People admire her for her appearance, her dance moves, and her vocal work. Her fan base has ben dubbed the BeyHive. It seems as if everybody loves her—but I don’t, and that’s okay. Just because seemingly everybody else loves her doesn’t mean I have to. Here are my reasons why I do not like Beyoncé. (Public service announcement: I do not mean to insult—I merely mean to offer a different perspective.)
1. She's put on a pedestal
Like I said, seemingly everyone loves her. Therefore, everything she does is great and she can do no wrong. It’s completely okay to rent out an entire hospital floor when you’re having a baby. I hope there was another hospital nearby where people could go if they needed help. Because clearly, this hospital was too busy catering to Beyoncé.
2. She's just another sex symbol
Her average song is very repetitive. (How many times can you say, "My hands up, my hands up; I stand up with my hands up?") She's not the wordsmith like other music artists. And for someone like me, I listen to music mainly for the lyrics and get frustrated when a song doesn’t have many of them. I understand an important component to her artistry is her dancing, but you don’t see that on the radio. I find her music annoying because there aren’t many words to the songs. And when I do see her perform—either in a music video or in something like a Super Bowl halftime show, her dance moves and the way she looks screams sex symbol. And the look on her face says she knows it. I get tired of seeing that everywhere.
3. Her ego could fill an arena.
Most of the pictures on her Instagram feed are of her. Where is the humility? I feel like this could ruin someone’s already fragile self-confidence. Seeing photos of her and how flawless she thinks she is all the time? I know I would get down about myself if I were a fan of hers. To answer my own question, there is no humility there. One look at any of these photos and you can tell she's just as in love with herself as her fans are in love with her. So I’m not sorry that I’m not a follower of hers—on Instagram or in reality.
4. She and her fans attack people for not liking her.
One of our rights as people is that we can believe in what we want to believe in, right? Then why is it so bad for people to not like Beyoncé? Why do we get attacked for it? Just because I think she's overrated and arrogant gives people a right to attack me? It’s just not right to attack people for liking a certain celebrity, or even person or idea for that matter. Let me live my life and I will let you live yours.
Like I said before, I'm not trying to be insulting or rude—this is my own perspective. If you're a Beyoncé fan, that’s your prerogative. And it’s my prerogative to not be a Beyoncé fan. And that is okay.
