It's common for people to have a strong dislike towards the twangy sound and themes revolving around beer, trucks and chicks within country music (we all know there's to more to the genre, but the stereotype is humorous and partially true). Whether or not you enjoy road trips, bedroom dance sessions or a nice moment with your significant other to this type of music, you have to admit the lyrics to these songs, more often than not, are powerful and heartwarming. A recent hit has influenced the hearts of its listeners, or that's the hope. "Humble and Kind" sang by Tim McGraw, although written by Lori McKenna, entails life lessons that even the best of people need to be reminded of.
1. "Go to church 'cause your mamma says to"
Church can be one of those grey areas. Some people go to church, some don't. Some think attending church is what makes them a believer, others believe their faith can grow without attending a weekly service. One area that isn't grey though: listening to your parents. Do what they ask with a happy heart and smile; they only want to make you greater every day.
2. "Visit Grandpa every chance that you can"
Take the opportunities to visit with your grandparents; if not them, an older relative or a dear friend that could use the company. Grow in wisdom, absorb their stories and hear their laugh because one day you won't be able to get those little moments back. Things are forever, people are not; choose what you will cherish.
3. "Hold the door"
Here's a big one: don't be the person who lets the door shut behind them when someone is only two steps away. Take that extra second to help another person out and perform an act of kindness that could brighten their day; you never know how you can affect them.
4. "Say "please", say "thank you'"
Basic manners seem to be slipping from the younger generations. Be polite. Be pleasant. Be whom your parents raised you to be. Tip: for even more fun, say the phrases in another language, just don't accidentally cuss or make the situation worse (we all know someone who is embarrassingly funny like that).
5. "Don't steal, don't cheat, don't lie"
Don't: take from stores, strangers or friends without permission. Cheat in school, relationships or sports. Lie to parents, yourself or others.
Do: give tips to servers or encouragements to random passersby. Work your hardest, practice daily to be your best and talk out issues. Be honest, straightforward and think of others feelings, too.
The don'ts make life a lot more difficult, whereas the dos always make it more enjoyable.
6. "Don't accept a free ride from no one."
This is an easy one to get caught up in within a world of trying to find the easy way out. Make something of yourself and then fight to be the greatest version of you. Don't take from others so that, in turn, they can take from you. Be creative, outstanding, strong, goal-oriented, responsible and awesome all at the same time.
7. "Don't hold a grudge or a chip..."
"Here's why: Bitterness keeps you from flying." Why waste energy on something that happened with someone at some time? Doing such hardens your heart and only hurts you, and others, in the end. Forgive and do your best to forget; if not, learn, move on and make life better from that point forward. Take the weight off your shoulders in order that you may 'fly'.
8. "Know the difference between sleeping with someone, and sleeping with someone you love."
Don't give yourself up for someone who may not deserve your heart. Be with a special person before you give yourself away physically and emotionally. There are various viewpoints on how to go about this, but, in the end, be with that one person who betters you, adores you and cherishes you; don't waste those special moments on anything less.
9. "I love you ain't no pick up line."
Ah, a line that can be overused, but then again it's easy to love people. Savor this phrase; once it's used too many times, it can lose its' power. Say it to a significant other when the time is right, with meaning and vulnerability. Don't use it for the other benefits it may get you.
10. "When it's hot, eat a root beer popsicle, shut off the AC and roll the windows down."
First of all, root beer popsicles are pretty tasty, especially in the hot sun with a breeze blowing at your face. Second, relish the moments that make life count. Always be adventurous, open-minded, bold and appreciating. Side note, monkeys are cute.
11. "Don't take for granted the love this life gives you."
Love often and without fear and remember let others love you! It only comes once in awhile; don't be too preoccupied with unimportant matters that cause you to miss out on one of life's greatest treasures.
12. "When you get where you're going, don't forget turn back around."
Set your goals high and work until you reach them. Once you get to the top, don't forget how you got there, who helped you out and how thankful you can be for the opportunities that presented themselves to you. You can't take life on alone and even the worst of times push you to be great.
13. "Help the next one in line."
Going to get your morning coffee? Pay for the next customer. On an afternoon stroll? Throw change towards the new musician or help a needy person purchase a hamburger. Having a tough day? Brighten your mood by telling the next person you see what you like about them, even if it is a complete stranger. Once you give, it just keeps on giving.
14. "Always stay humble and kind."
No matter where you are in life, what you've done, or who you are, there are always reasons to be humble and kind. Reach your dreams, but never believe you are the best in the world. Achieve greatness, but never rub it in. Create waves of happiness around you by never forgetting to consider others through acts of kindness.
Stay humble
Stay kind.
Thank you Tim McGraw and Lori McKenna, the world needed a reminder of how it should be.
