Why Alternative Spring Breaks Are The Way To Go

I didn't spend my break getting drunk on the beach, and I'm OK with that.

Why Alternative Spring Breaks Are The Way To Go

College spring breaks are always seen as drunken all-day beach parties by most of society. It has been portrayed by media that this is the only way you should spend your break. In actuality, though, I am in my junior year, and I have never gone to the beach for spring break. In fact, I haven't done much of any partying on my spring break. Instead, I have committed myself to something much more fulfilling.

The past two years I have spent my spring break as a participant, and this year as a leader on our campus's Empowerment Retreat. Note that last year was the first time it was offered, or else I would have gone freshman year, too. This retreat is focused on service in Eastern Kentucky. The area we go to is one of the poorest counties in the state. This trip was my fourth time visiting Auxier, and once again I had an amazing experience.

This was actually one of the most impactful visits thus far. I met one of the strongest, most inspiring women in the world. Connie, also known as "Big Momma," has been through so much from early in life, but that has never taken away an ounce of her positivity. She welcomed my group into her home as though we were old friends. She shared her stories, and with each one there was a lesson she wanted us to learn. Even with all that she has been through and having so little, she is willing to constantly give. She told us that was how she was raised and that was how she raised her children; to always lend a helping hand.

Comparing my spring break to the typical college student is a little odd. My break was all about helping others, connecting with others on a deeper level, and learning to be more self-less. Whereas those who spent a week getting drunk on a beach were practicing characteristics that are much less desirable.

I'm not saying that I am such a martyr of the world and such an amazing person. That's not what I am getting at, at all. I just wonder why I would spend hundreds of dollars to go to a beach and get drunk when I could have an incredible experience in my own backyard. I guess I will never understand, just like other people won't understand my choice. If you have the opportunity though, I highly recommend stepping outside your comfort zone and trying an alternative spring break.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
