September 6th, 2015, is a day I will always remember –– it was the day I started a new journey that would lead me to find my best friends, a new family and put me in a place that I would be able to call my home away from home.
I happened upon Alpha Xi Delta by mere coincidence. I woke up to an email inviting me to an information session, and I didn't really think anything of it until I saw there would be free food. I, of course, went to seek out the free grub, only to come out of the session with the desire to be one of the inspiring women that helped form AXiD up to this point. I was obsessed from the moment I was introduced to the double blue and gold, and fell even more in love when I was invited to be a part of the sisterhood. The time I received my colony pin will forever be one of the most cherished memories that I continue to hold on to for the rest of my life, and now I have another special memory to go along with it –– On February 21st, 2016, the Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Texas Tech was officially installed as a chapter AND the colony class was initiated. My mom was also installed as an Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae member, so now we are Mom/Daughter and Sisters! How awesome is that?!
I never thought that a sorority could mean so much to me, but it is much more than people realize. A sorority is a family, it is a home, it is having so much love for your sisters and what you stand for that you can’t find the words to explain it. A sorority is joy, it is acceptance, and it is about sharing your life with people that really care about you. Lastly, a sorority is about helping the young ladies that started their journey come out on the other side as women that have the potential to make a difference in the people and places around them. It is not about the parties, the T-shirts (even though they are really great), or the social events…it is about being a part of something that you truly believe in and representing it to the standard it deserves. Alpha Xi Delta has changed my life, and I couldn’t be more thankful for it.
The moral of all of this is: Whenever there is free food involved, go. It might just change your life forever.
