Back It Up: The Importance Of Being Able To Validate Your Opinion

A discussion of the issues within both the pro-life and pro-choice arguments I see on Facebook.

Back It Up: The Importance Of Being Able To Validate Your Opinion
Alex Wong

I have never seen so many pro-life and pro-choice posts in all my life as i have in the past two or three weeks. Honestly, I am pretty sure that most people have problems with abortion, because most of the people I have discussed the topic with cannot personally agree with it even if they do support the practice. There is, in my opinion, no defensible reason to make the practice illegal, because legislating morality is a task that no one in their right mind would consider to be possible (sorry idealists). So if you happen to find yourself in the pro-life camp, I would like to ask how many of you are reaching out to the people considering abortion and offering assistance or adoption or any number of things you could be offering? If you are pro-choice, I don't see how you can rationalize that with other positions that are typically held within liberal camps like equal treatment for all, or being against the death penalty, or any number of things that are within the liberal platform that are seemingly contradictory to the opinions presented within the pro life position.

But every time I discuss either side, I need an explanation of how each side is so misguided of their own opinions and how they mesh with their other opinions, because I cannot see how you value a fetus but are pro-death penalty or you devalue a fetus and value the life of a criminal over what many would consider a just punishment. I am not expecting answers to all these questions, but you can't go through life without having to defend your position with rational arguments. And no, getting mad and yelling or name calling or any number of emotional responses are not acceptable for this task. You have to be able to intelligently respond to opposing points and convince people that you are right. You cannot persuade people while you are berating them. Present your opinion, then defend it. Don't get pissy if they don't agree, you cannot get caught up in attempting to fix everyone's opinion. But if you cannot defend something, you are not in a position that you can discuss it publicly (and yes, that includes Facebook). So go out there and present how you feel to the world, but only if you can defend your opinion of the truth without being a prick about it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
