A few days ago, the hearts of '90s and early 2000s kids stopped for a brief moment as Cartoon Network announced that it would be releasing a new season of one of its most beloved action shows. "Samurai Jack" is back, after being off the air for almost 11 years. So, naturally, for the past few days, I have been scouring every possible nerd site out there to try to find out as much information about the new season possible. I have compiled that information to share with all my fellow fans out there to find out what it means now that Jack is back.
Genndy Tartakovsky, the original creator, will be returning for the project.
For me, this basically just confirms that the series will still be amazing. Tartakovsky takes a lot of the inspiration while writing Jack from classic Ronin novels which guarantees for some classic fight scenes. Not to mention his track record for other amazing animated classics such as "Dexter’s Laboratory" and "Star Wars: Clone Wars."
Jack will be part of the Adult Swim block.
This is interesting information. Previously, "Samurai Jack" had typically been part of Cartoon Network when it first aired, and then only moved to Toonami when reruns were shown in late 2014. This could mean that this new season of Jack will be even grittier than previous years, attuning itself to the now 20-year-olds who grew up on the show.
The teaser that went viral from YouTube appears to be from the comic books.
While not extremely well known outside of the truly dedicated fans, there was a brief "Samurai Jack" comic series which was released in 2013 for about 20 issues. The comics were written by the very talented Jim Zubkavich and drawn by Andy Suriano. Although at this time, it does not appear that the two are involved within the revival, the teaser very clearly takes its inspiration from one of the covers from the comic series. This suggest that the comics could possibly hold some influence over the upcoming series.
The new season will pick up where the last left off.
As you recall, the final episode of the fourth season was the epic final clash between Jack and Aku. The series then seemingly ended on a scene in which, as the dust clears, Aku is flying away as a bat shouting that he will return. Jack replies that he will be waiting for as long as it takes to destroy Aku. Now we can see just how that fight changed things, and what Aku has done to make himself stronger to beat Jack.
While not much is known now, Cartoon Network said it will be releasing more information very soon. All that anyone truly needs to know, is that their hearts can rest easy because Jack is back.
