Alive But Not Living

How important is enjoying life to you?

Alive But Not Living

The world is constantly moving. Life often seems to be restless. Big cities never sleep. Cars are racing by. People are rushing to get somewhere, to do something. Goals are being made. Dreams are being chased. Nonstop living.

Is this really living though?

We are so consumed by our final destination that we sometimes forget to actually live. As our childhood diminishes, our perception of what it means to live becomes far more limited. The fact that we are alive and doing something should not be the only qualifiers for living. Going to school, writing an essay, getting a job, walking your dogs -- these are all a part of life, but there is so much more to living than just the routine things.

Living in Los Angeles for 10 years is an experience I would never replace, but the way I lived is something I greatly regret. I was constantly on the go. It almost seems like I was doing everything unconsciously. I would wake up, complete my morning routine, go to school, have lunch, go to practice, come home, shower, eat, study, sleep. My routine would sometimes change, but my point is that, it is living a heavily structured life that stops us from living.

Living is taking a moment to smell the fresh air. It is watching the sunrise, and then watching the sunset later that same day. Living is experiencing the world around you. It is feeling the wind blow through your hair and the sand in your toes. It can be something as simple as eating lunch outdoors while appreciating your surroundings. Living is about taking the time to admire.

It is crucial to just stop what you are doing every once in a while and to simply enjoy life. I first came to this realization when I moved to Santa Cruz. Although Los Angeles is considered to be a lively city, I never experienced true living until I moved here. People hardly ever seem to be in a hurry here. The majority of people, including me, incorporate true enjoyment into their daily routines.

Enjoying life is my definition of living. My attitude about everything has taken a positive turn ever since I started taking life more lightly. I still live a relatively routine life, but it is no longer a fast pace life. I make a conscious effort to go outdoors and enjoy the fresh air as often as possible. I enjoy life, and therefore I am living.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
