Dear Mom and Dad,
So, 30 years ago, you made a decision that wouldn’t only change your lives, but also would change mine. You both packed a backpack with your dearest belongings and decided to cross the border into the United States, with the hope of pursuing the American Dream. Although you were both from the same city, you never crossed paths until destiny brought you together in the City of Angels. Little did you know that your lives would take a 180-degree turn, and you would become parents.
Growing up we didn’t have much, living pay check to pay check. My sister and I never complained because we knew you did the best you could. Mom, cleaning homes, babysitting and working at factory never impeded you from missing a swim meet or taking us to the park in the afternoon. Dad, I saw you get up every day at 7 a.m. for work. Even when you didn’t feel well, you never missed a day and because of you I know what hard work looks like.
Multiple times I remember people looking at you different because you didn’t speak the language. Others would say atrocious things about our people calling us names like beaner, wetbacks and ignorant. I am sorry you were ridiculed. No one should have to go through that. You both came to this country expecting nothing from it but a fresh start, and a new place to call home. As a child it killed me to think you were looked at as different. Now that I am older I realize those people who judged you let judgement blind them from seeing who you really were, hardworking loving individuals. Not having the same opportunities as other citizens never stopped you. Both of you never take anything for granted and you have showed me that life is what you make out of it, we create our own opportunities and for that I thank you.
At 23, I find myself full of anxiety and fear of what the future has in store for me. This is due to the fact that in a week I will be graduating and receiving my bachelor’s degree. I am very proud of my achievement I know this wouldn’t have been possible without you two. You deserve this recognition as much as I do. Putting me through school was not an easy task for you two and you have given me the best gift any parent can give their child: an education. I am proud of you.
One day, I hope to be a fraction of the parents you both are, I hope I’ve made you proud. I promise you all the sacrifices you have made have not gone unnoticed, I am eternally grateful.
Mom and Dad, I love you.
