Sometimes music helps us heal more than any words can. The music can tap into our hearts better than anything spoken can, the lyrics can reach us better than anyone's advice and assurances ever could.
I know that music has helped me through a lot in my life- positive and negative things- and I know that music moves people in ways that words or actions never could. It brings out the best and worst of people's emotions whether they were expecting it or not.
We're going to progress through the stages of a nice little break up playlist that can be super helpful in getting your feels out. Maybe this "playlist" will help you, maybe it won't, and maybe there will only be a few songs you'll identify with. But that's okay. Let the music speak to you in whatever way it does.
Fresh/Raw Feels
These songs are best for when the break is fresh, when your feelings are raw. They're the slowest and can lull you as you get all the tears out and wonder why.
Impossible Year (Panic! At The Disco)
"There's no you and me/This impossible year/Only heartache and heartbreak/And gin mades of tears"
I mean, not that 2016 was an impossible year in it's own right, but it's like, here's some confirmation on that. Coming from Panic!'s last album it's got a nice jazzy feel to it too. If you're into that.
Lovesick Fool (The Cab)
"Waking up just brings me down (Down)"
"Who put that rock in your chest, won't you tell me"
It's rough, I get it. It's rough trying to get out of bed for at least a week and you're questioning what caused the switch. Sometimes you'll find out why, other times you will never get the answer. And it'll be tough knowing that, for a time, but it'll only be for a little bit. But at some point you'll need to get up out of that bed and stop being the lovesick fool.
I Hate U I Love U (Gnash)
"Always missing people that I shouldn't be missing...I know that I control my thoughts and I should stop reminiscing"
THIS. SONG. was on repeat for DAYS. I even learned the really fast part of it. But it nails the part of still having feelings and hating it at the same time. There's the history you keep going back to and knowing, maybe even accepting, that there will be no more additions to that history.
Others Worth Mentioning:
Alone (I Prevail)
You're Not That Girl (MAX)
Dreaming With A Broken Heart (John Mayer)
Acceptance/Truth Feels
These are best when you're all cried out and you start being strong and move forward.
Partition (Béyonce)
"I just wanna be the girl you like."
Honestly "Partition" is on here because of the bass. If you need something to just drown out the world but isn't screamo, the bass in this song is phenomenal. Granted, the song is primarily about sex, but like I said before- THAT BASS THOUGH.
Save Your Heart (Mayday Parade)
"Save your heart/For someone that's worth dying for/Don't give it away"
There's so much truth in this song. If you're going to give your heart away it needs to be to someone who will take care of it. So until you meet that person comes around, you need to save your heart.
Fake Love (Drake)
"I got fake people showin' fake love to me/Straight up to my face"
There's going to be all sorts of people out there. Sometimes you're going to get in with the fake people, sometimes you're going to get played, and it's going to hurt especially if you're a genuine person. But Drake's got you. (And ironically, all of the versions of this I could find on YouTube were fake, so...)
Others Worth Mentioning:
I'll Be Your Reason, FURY Remix (Illenium)
Deuces (Chris Brown, Featuring Tyga & Kevin McCall)
Drink You Away (Justin Timberlake)
Rough/Angry Feels
These are best for if you need some noise in your life, if you need to drown out your surroundings, or if you're still angry, or if the other songs just aren't doing it for you.
Novocaine (Fall Out Boy)
"And now I'm just numb/I don't feel a thing for you."
This song just makes me angry. Like, the vibe it brings just makes me angry. There's no explaining it. And it makes me feel numb, which is basically talked about in the song.
No More (Cold For June)
"I gave you everything I had but you don't f***ing deserve it."
"Can you look me in the eye and say you're proud of the choices you make."
This one's really good if you're just done with it all. When you're just like "NOPE. No more of this bs." This one is perfect for if there was a lot wrong in the relationship, if you had to put up with a lot of stuff that's not worth putting up with. No. More.
Stuck In Your Head (I Prevail)
"You're not the one I want in my bed/I'm not the song you want in your head."
"Stuck In Your Head" is perfect. Perfect for when you're over it. I don't know why, but this song has gotten me through the end. Each time I think "I miss..." I think of all the ways I got screwed over and I think "I don't want that."
Others Worth Mentioning:
Riot (Three Days Grace)
Headstrong (Trapt)
Face Down (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus)
Hopeful Feels
Best for when you're ready to move on. Not recommended for the fresh/raw stage mainly because you're like "why????" and a hot mess of crying. Only listen when you're ready and know that somebody's out there and they're looking for you too.
Someday You Will Be Loved (Death Cab For Cutie)
"You'll be loved/You'll be loved/Like you never have known. And the memories of me will see more like bad dreams"
"But I know your heart belongs/To someone you've yet to meet"
Someday. I mean, obviously it's not now. This was just temporary, a taste of what's to come, and something that's going to be infinitely better. And again it goes back to saving your heart until the right person to come.
On My Way (Boyce Avenue)
"I'll be there the moment/You come out in white/'Cause I'm on my way/On my way"
Like a love note from your future significant other. :) Again, this song has gotten me through a lot and it keeps my hopes up. It takes a lot to be patient and to wait for that right person. And it hurts to know that, yeah, you're not the first for your significant other that they've had a history before you. But you will be the rest of their history.
Somebody Out There (A Rocket To The Moon)
"There's somebody out there who's looking for you/Someday he'll find you I swear that its true."
Another one of those songs to keep your hopes up. That there is somebody out there waiting for you, you just have to find them.
Others Worth Mentioning:
Unanswered Prayers (Garth Brooks)
Not Like The Movies (Katy Perry)
You Are Loved, Don't Give Up (Josh Groban)
Trust me, a lot of these songs will help. They're not going to heal you completely, but they sure do help. Best of luck in your healing.
