When it comes to having short hair, many of us sing the same old song. “I used to have long hair in elementary school, then my mom put that relaxer in my hair”. I’ve sung this song so many times I can say it in two languages, but having a perm put in your hair is not the end of the world. We live in a world now where we have products to help us strengthen and grow our natural hair back, so we can stop singing the song. I have a set of advice I want to give you on how to grow your natural hair back, it may not work for everyone but it’s working for me.
1. Stop putting the relaxers in your hair.
Give it a rest with all of these different chemicals, you don’t need them to make your hair straight. Put the Just for Me down sis, I promise I’m not lying. It’s all a matter of training your hair to behave. The sooner you start to train your hair to lay down with a simple blowout and tie down, the less time you have to worry about budgeting for relaxers.
2. Find a good beautician.
Find someone who has growing hands, for me, this person was my sister for a very long time. She always braided my hair to keep it neat and my hair was down to my back. I don’t know who told them to put a relaxer in my hair but that’s in the past. Now I have a beautician who is forever helping me when I stray off the path of naturalness in favor of a relaxer so I won’t have to do much with my hair. Get someone good who knows your type of hair and how to care for it. You’ll thank me later.
3. Speaking of braids, start rocking those protective hairstyles.
I know people say that braids aren’t good for your edges but that’s where finding a good beautician comes in. Don’t go to someone who makes the braids so tight that it hurts to smile or laugh because it sucks to have to look serious all the time when in reality you’re trying not to give yourself a headache from too much facial movement. You won’t lose your edges if you find someone who knows how to secure braids without stretching out your face.
4. Keep your hair moisturized!
The human body is like a plant, and that applies especially for your hair. You often wonder why hair everywhere else on your body grows faster than the hair on your head, and there are a number of reasons as to why that happens (keeping the heat off of it is a big one) but mainly it’s because your body gets wet often from showering. I’m not saying soak your hair in water every day, but get a spray bottle and mist it up so your roots will be wet and allow it to grow.
5. Drink a lot of water.
Water on the outside is good for your hair, but water on the inside is good for your hair and more. Like I said, the human body is like a plant, and plants need water to grow. Drinking a lot of water, you’ll see an improvement in hair quality and length, skin quality, and you’ll find yourself not being as winded.
6. Keep the heat out of your hair.
You’re frying your roots every time you take a hot comb or flat iron to your head. Every now and then is fine but don’t do it on a consistent basis. That’s how you end up with split ends and dead roots.
