Advice For High School Seniors Deciding On A School

When trying to decide on which school to pick, you can become stressed very easily. Knowing that there are only a few months of school left before you go off to college, you may be tempted to rush the decision process and just pick a school. Just picking a school because it seems like all of you classmates have already decided isn't worth rushing. It is important to take the time to decide on the best school for you because this is the place where you will be spending the next four years of your life. Last year at this time, I too had to make my decision so I know how stressful it can be. Take an deep breath and relax because it will all be OK. Everything is going to work out, just take a deep breath and relax because these words of advice will help you make your decision.

1. Follow your gut.

Don’t let your parents, friends, family or anyone steer you away from the school that you think is the best fit. You are the one who will be there for four years and it is your college experience.

2. Don’t be afraid to look somewhere that doesn’t have a well-known name.

When you graduate, your education and the person that you have become are more important than anything else. If you’re qualified, then it won’t matter whether or not you went to Ivy League or big name school to get a good job.

3. Be yourself.

If you feel like there’s too much pressure, then give yourself some time and space to think about your decision. No one else can know what you want in a school as much as you do.

4. Go outside of your comfort zone.

Look at schools of all sizes and types. If you don’t look at a variety, then you may never know that a big state school isn’t right for you until you show up in the fall. Looking at schools a little farther from home may surprise you. You may fall in love with a school and forgo the close proximity to home that you had planned on.

5. Ask questions!

Admissions counselors, tour guides and anyone on campus will answer your questions or help point you to someone who can help you.

6. It's OK if you don't know anyone.

When going into college, it may seem like everyone knows someone besides you, but that definitely isn’t true. Go in with an open mind and be ready to socialize! Once you meet roommates and people on your hall, you will be fine! Remember, everyone is in the same boat and nervous about meeting others so you’re not alone.

7. Don’t go to a school just because you’re a legacy, or have friends or family there.

This is an opportunity for you to venture out and explore opportunities. College is a time to learn and enjoy life. Don’t feel like you won’t be close with your high school friends if you don’t go to the same school. If you’re close, then you will make it work.

8. Do the research.

Make sure the school offers the programs you are interested in (majors, minors and other classes). If you are undecided, then look into programs that you are possibly interested in and make sure the school has them so you aren’t scrambling to make things work later on.

9. Test it out!

Visit the campus, go on a tour or request to talk to department chairs to learn more information. Some schools offer overnight programs or opportunities to observe classes and experience campus life. Don’t be discouraged if you struggle to find the right fit; it could take more than one visit to know that this is the school for you!

10. Don't stress too much.

If there is a chance that you end up not liking the school you chose, then you can always transfer. Although it isn’t ideal, you may be able to get a clearer vision of what you like in a school which will help you find the perfect fit.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
