Our Daily Bears

Congrats! You have survived Orientation and witnessed the spectacular traditions encompassing Baylor University through Line Camp. Your next obstacle? The first day of school. It can be extremely exciting but daunting as you take your first steps into the next four years of your life, but don’t worry. Here is some advice that will help you survive the first day of college at the wonderful Baylor University.

1. Wear your "I Know Where I'm Going Shirt"

You were given this t-shirt for a reason—so that you wouldn’t have to think so hard about your outfit for the first day of school. That way you can focus on your classes and making lifelong friends that you are sure to find on the first day of school. Plus, it lets everyone know that you're a freshman so they can offer you assistance, since the first day of school can be overwhelming. That’s Baylor for ya: making your life easier one shirt at a time.

2. Wear your Baylor ID on a lanyard

This is so you don’t lose it. I can’t tell you how many times I lost my ID because it wasn’t on a lanyard. Silly me.

3. Tell everyone you meet about your High school career

This matter. This is how people are going to get to know you. Tell them about your GPA from high school, your extensive extracurricular schedule and your SAT score. This is how they're going to measure your intelligence and character, because Baylor is a pool of the brightest students who strive for the best.

4. Run to every class

There is a strict attendance policy amongst all teachers and they enforce it hard. So to make sure that you are on time, you better sprint to class. Plus, it pays to be an early bird.

5. Keep your head in your books

Study, study, study! Your parents are paying thousands for you to come here, so you better put in work. I’m talking 4.0. There is nothing more important than your grades. Nothing.

College can be intense and really hard, but if you really want the best advice, do the exact opposite of this list. Breathe. College is a time of growth and self-exploration and is a lot of fun. Baylor provides opportunities unlike any other and you’re sure to find your place. Just go with the flow and the flow will take you places you never imagined you would be, with the greatest stories and memories to cherish for a lifetime. So, enjoy the rest of your summer, stop looking up articles on how to survive the first day of school and take it on when it comes. I promise, you will not only survive but thrive if you just go in with an open mind and no expectations.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
