An active's perspective on recruitment

The Unpopular Opinion Of Sorority Life
Maddie Archer-Burton

I just went through my first sorority recruitment as an active member. Now, I had heard about how terrible recruitment on our side was; the grueling hours, the cranky sisters. But I've never heard the positives. All I have ever heard is how much everybody hates recruitment - but I loved it.

Now, I understand: there's long hours, everyone gets crabby, but so what? We work hard so we can bring the best girls home. Who cares if we have to work long hours? It's worth it. Yes, people get crabby, and people yell, but we need to be the best to bring the best; and we should want to be the best. We aren't going to get there by people smiling kindly at us, whispering, and walking on egg shells around the chapter. We don't become the best by not working hard and if we're not working hard then why are we even there?

So me? I just looked passed that. I grew up on teams; sports and otherwise. We didn't do good because we didn't get yelled at: we did great because we got yelled at until we did things correctly. So why is a sorority any different? We're a team. We're practicing to find new members and make our chapter the best it can be.

On top of all of that, I enjoyed spending time with my sisters. I don't think I've ever spent so much time, or felt as close or as loved from my sisters as I do now that we've gone through recruitment together. We spent days on days together; and while, yes, everybody was tired and cranky, everybody got closer and everybody showed the chapter so much love.

Which brings me to my next point: I have never appreciated my sorority more than I do now. I've always loved my sorority. I've always held a special spot in my heart for it, but now I truly appreciate it and feel the passion for my sorority that I think everybody should feel.

Finally, we ended the week by bringing home an amazing new pledge class. We have new members!!!! And if that doesn't get everybody excited, elated, and appreciative of all of our hard work throughout the past couple of weeks, then I don't know what will.

Recruitment on an active's side is a lot of things. There are a lot of negatives thrown out about recruitment and work week. But I had fun. I grew to love my sisters, my chapter, and my sorority as a whole, more than I ever have before. And I truly believe that this is how everybody who's an active member of a sorority should look at recruitment.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
