Everyone wants to succeed. We all want glory, something to be proud of. There's one problem, though: No one is willing to work anymore. Instant gratification is consuming the thought process of how we perceive success. If we do not see results instantaneously, then we are quick to give up and deem the task unworthy of our time. But, here's the kicker: The most rewarding achievements do not happen overnight. It is time to understand the discipline of waiting.
You can never earn something without putting time and effort into it. So why have we limited ourselves to thinking we must earn what we are after now? We all want something. She wants to be the captain of the soccer team. He wants to be student council president. She wants a promotion. Right now, I want you to think about something that you want to accomplish. Got it? Now think about how you are going to earn it. Notice I did not say get it. We do not get jobs, promotions, etc. We must earn those positions by putting in hard work, persevering when it gets tough, and staying determined to reach the end goal.
The sense of entitlement is plaguing society and causing people to believe that they should not have to partake in the "discipline of waiting" philosophy. Whether it's college students in the classroom or businessmen in a company, people have begun to think that, just because they hold a certain status, they are deserving of a grade or a pay raise. Consequently, we put the blame on others when we do not see the results we want. The concept of earning grades and pay raises is starting to diminish because no one is disciplined enough to work towards those long-term goals. We want results now.
The discipline of waiting: It is a philosophy that everyone should embrace. We cannot expect to be rewarded unless we have worked our hardest, experienced the grit, and took the hits as motivation to keep going. Set goals and be realistic as to how you will accomplish them. Those who are successful will go that extra mile. Those who fail were too busy pointing fingers and making excuses. Which person will you be? Are you going to step up and be the match that ignites your own fire? Or will you simmer away because you stopped working to fuel your fire? The choice is yours. We all have the potential to create our own success, and you can either discipline yourself to wait and work towards those achievements or give up. No one else can do that but you. I encourage you all to trust in the discipline of waiting. Improvement, glory, pride and accomplishment will await you in the end.
"You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now, if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!" --Rocky Balboa
