There comes a time in every person’s life where they question their own existence. For a planet of 7 billion people, it’s hard to think that we are all put on this earth with a purpose. For the everyday person, life is already a difficult thing to have to deal with; but for transgendered people, this is just one more burden that they have to deal with.
According to Merriam Webster, transgendered is defined as “relating to, or being a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from one which corresponds to the person’s sex at birth.” For people who are transgendered, not only is life of their own existence difficult, but they also have to deal with other people not identifying them as their preferred gender. They live in constant fear of what people think about they as well as whether or not they want to pretend to be someone who they are not. Based on society and how the world is run, people view each other with a stereotype and how they believe that others are supposed to be.
For transgendered people, they must make the decision as to whether they want to let people see who they really are or who people want them to be. Their biggest supporters who should be behind them must start in their family. If a person’s decisions cannot be supported beginning at home, then this can make their transitions into their ideal self, much more difficult.
For people who do not have to wake up and feel as though they are born into the wrong body, this can often be difficult to understand. Although the best advice that they can give is to just stay behind people and promise to give them the help that they need in order to make their transitions easier. In order for people to be more accepting of themselves, they need the support from others around them.
I believe that it is important for people to live their lives the way they want to. I believe that we are all unique people and should be who we want to me, not who others think we should be. I believe that no one should be discriminated based on gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, political views, or based on the color of their hair. We are all humans and should be treated as such. If the intention was for everyone to be the same, the word “unique,” wouldn’t even be a word.
All people are entitled to be the person that they want to be. If someone is born and doesn’t believe that their outsides match their insides, they deserve to be able to change it in order to be comfortable with who they are. We aren’t able to live happy lives by pretending to be someone that we’re not.
One important topic that was discussed in chapters 5/6 was the ideas of gender roles and gender norms. I do not believe that people should be labeled. I believe that we are all people and that we all have souls. We should be able to identify with who we want to be, not what society wants us to be.
For me, I want to become an adolescent psychologist, I believe that that is the most critical time in a person’s life because it has the most influences from the outside world that will shape us into who we grow up to be and how we will impact the world. By better understanding who people are through their own eyes, we are better able to get to know them for who they really are.
