I've been to Epcot. I've walked around and visited all of the different countries. Who knew countries could be so different yet so cool at the same time? Even on that small of a scale, it made me want to see more. I want to study abroad while I'm in college. College is the perfect time to explore new places and immerse oneself in a new culture. I think studying abroad will enrich my college experience, and prepare me for future travels.
1. There is so much to see in the world
I have lived in the United States for my entire life. I have spent 19 years in the seventh smallest state in the country. I can't say I've never traveled, but my time spent somewhere else other than my hometown is minuscule. Think for a second about how many other countries there are in the world other than the United States...195. And there are seven continents and I have never made it to more than one. I think it's about time I make my way to another one and maybe even the other side of the world.
2. To gain cultural awareness
Everyone has their different backgrounds, but for me I have spent my life following the same traditions and celebrating the same holidays and eating the same types of foods. I want to live in a different culture and learn as much about it as I can. I want to immerse myself in a completely different place. I will experience new traditions and new celebrations and maybe even eat some new food, too. I hope to become more aware of and learn to appreciate other cultures and traditions.
3. To meet new people.
I love people. It's as simple as that. You can learn a lot about a place by just meeting and talking to the people there. Everyone is different, but there are some values that all people share. It will be cool to learn about differences between cultures, but also about the things that are universal. Learning about the people and their lives will help me appreciate the place even more.
4. To expand my horizons.
I am excited to learn more about new places and cultures. Traveling will allow me to see and face many new things, and I know there will be cultural barriers and that I may even experience culture shock. This will help me to move outside of my comfort zone and to try new things. I look forward to learning how to maneuver myself around an unfamiliar place with confidence and return home having gained something from the experience. I will not only learn more about the place to which I travel, but more about myself, as well.
I can't wait for my study abroad experience. Watch out world, I'm coming for you.
