As you've probably heard by now through dozens of articles and tabloids, yep, the "Roseanne" continuation has been canceled and it is huge.
For those that are not aware of what transpired over the last couple of days, allow me to clarify. Roseanne has been known for her tastes in political controversies and her support of Donald Trump, which in and of itself does not make her deserving of having her self-titled show canceled (though other more political individuals may disagree); however, she has been known to stir the pot ... a lot.
The American Broadcasting Company better known as ABC has stayed away from Roseanne's controversial remarks because they weren't yet so problematic that it required intervention. With the sitcom's revival, the network enjoyed a huge premiere turnout and consistently high ratings throughout the season as fans loved to see one of their old-time favorite shows take a swing at modern-day America. It seemed like the show would continue forward without a hitch until Roseanne made racist remarks about former White House senior advisor under Barack Obama, Valerie Jarrett.
People were in an uproar about the disrespect and unprofessional-ism Barr was demonstrating and were impatiently waiting for action on ABC's behalf and then, they acted. ABC cut the cord on the "Roseanne" revival with Disney CEO Bob Iger stating, "there was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing." Although Roseanne apologized for the comments, it was too little too late.
Now that you know the story, you should know why this is huge.
It's not unheard of to hear shows getting canceled before because of a star's bad reputation. Sometimes the show goes under a cast change or a character is killed of/replaced, but in this scenario, ABC terminated it. It makes sense especially considering it'd be difficult to have "Roseanne" air without Roseanne as part of the cast (this is why self-titled shows can be a death sentence), but this is more than that. The show was bringing in successfully high ratings and there was no doubt that it was heading for a second season, but a television network actually made the correct decision to ignore the cash value and pay attention to the media outlook value. Social media is everything now and without appropriate action, people would have most likely protested ABC and its other shows.
The decision was intelligent but it shows another side to actors that needs to be addressed. Although you are a person in a conventionally unconventional working field, you must maintain yourself professionally at all times, including social media. Though Twitter is known to be an app for ranting and giving personal thoughts, you still have a following to maintain. You may be outside of the workplace, but you are arguably always in work mode. An actor's reputation is everything and anything even in social media can be used against you (here's looking at you Kanye). In the past decade and beforehand, actors were more untouchable because there was less used to critique them, but with all these social outlets, keeping your composure is necessary.
This isn't exactly new news, but it's huge because of how successful Roseanne Barr's show was. Social media image is powerful and you either figure out how to play the game correctly or leave it before someone gets hurt.
For all those actors who believe themselves to be untouchable, you are not. Be mindful of what you say or do or else you'll be the next one getting "canceled."
