It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of the most beloved summer attractions to those UNT students who chose to stay in Denton for the summer. Yes, the rumors are true, Hailey's Club, home of our beloved 90s Night, will be closing its doors forever and leaving in its wake many heartbroken collegians. First they take away Fry street's infamous Dollar Dubs, now we have to learn how to survive the summer without 90s night. What is happening to Denton, Texas?
After 12 adventurous years, Hailey's Club will be closing for good December 31, 2015. Unfortunately, the summer revenues haven't been enough to keep the club afloat during the rest of the year. Manager Jennifer Gibbs has announced that although Hailey's is closing, two new concepts for the space will be revealed at the beginning of 2016 but let's be real, nothing will ever top wearing flannels in July and screaming the lyrics to "Baby Got Back" with all of your favorite gal pals in the middle of a crowded dance floor. Nothing. Now what are we supposed to do on our quiet, unassuming Tuesdays? Stay in??? Study for our summer classes??? Become productive members of society??? Unheard of. My heart mourns for the tiny freshmen who will never get to experience the headache inducing screams, the hazy, overcrowded, dance floors, or making friends in line when they get there after 10:30. Where will they go? How will they develop an appreciation for 90s hip hop? What will we do now that you're gone, dear 90s Night?
90s Night has always been there for us. Regardless of what happened during your summer Tuesday, you could count on 90s Night to make you forget your troubles, one way or another. The club will be conducting business as usual until the end of the year, including one final 90s Night on November 24 as a final farewell to our beloved 90s. So let us come together as a community to celebrate this bittersweet occasion by giving Hailey's, and 90s night, the viking send off it truly deserves (except maybe let's not actually set fire to the club because that's considered arson). As owner Gibbs said in an interview with the Dallas Observer, "We'd like to see Hailey's going out as an iconic venue retiring, and give it a proper send-off. Let's send it off with a bang, in the style that Hailey's deserves."
Rest in Peace, 90s Night. You will be missed.
