One of the most common misconceptions about Lent is that people feel the need to give something up. That is not always the case. You don't necessarily need to give up french fries or chocolate. You could give up a bad habit or behavior that hinders your everyday life. In addition, you can start doing something and change the way you go about your day.
Now that we are in the season of Lent, there are some things that I'm not ready to see for the next forty days:
1. The people who ONLY go to church on Ash Wednesday:
Going to church on Ash Wednesday is like going to the library during finals week. Everyone is there! You've never seen any of those people at any other mass. Thanks for coming and see you next year!
2. The people who remind you what they gave up at every given opportunity:
"I gave up chocolate." Good for you. "I gave up chips." Even better. I'm not trying to undermine what you gave up because some people don't do anything; however, no one cares as much as you think. Do it for yourself!
3. The people who "forget" what they gave up when it's only three days into Lent:
"Damn it. I totally forgot I gave up chicken nuggets," you say as you continue to eat them and then go back up for seconds. C'mon...you're better than that.
4. The people who just blatantly cheat:
There are the people who slip up and it's actually a mistake. There are the people who "forget." Then, there are the ones in a league of their own: The ones who just actually don't care.
5. The people who give up nothing:
"I'm a nice person. I'm not going to hell."
6. The people who cheat on Sundays:
Don't do it. Stop. You're stronger than that. Fight it. "It's allowed. It's Sunday." You were so close.
7. The people who find the loophole:
Why give up all types of chocolate when you could just give up Hershey's? Why give up all soda when you could just give up Dr. Pepper? If you want to stop eating chocolate, then give up every brand out there. You think you're so sly.
8. The people who get mad at Lent for being Lent:
Yes, these people actually exist. "40 days is too long." "Why did I give this up?"
9. The people who give up Lent for Lent:
There's always one. Don't be that one. If you are that one, please stop. Try again.
