Whether it's one hour apart or ten, long distance relationships in college can be tough. Not only do you have to brave long days, late nights, and stressful moments without your significant other, but sometimes it seems like everyone and everything is against you. Here are a few tips to make it through the weeks (and sometimes months) apart.
1. Communication Is KEY!

Talking to your significant other about things big and small will ensure that you two stay on the same page. Whether it be a simple good morning text, or flat out telling them that something they did upset you, it is important to stay in touch to talk things through.
2. Don't Let The Haters Get You Down
Sometimes it seems like everyone's a pessimist. From people telling you it won't last, to people asking how you can trust them when you're so far apart, it's important to learn to brush off comments made by people who don't know your situation and focus on the opinions of the people who matter to you.
3. Tell Each Other How You Feel
Telling each other how you feel about each other can be one of the most important steps. Because you can't see each other every day, it's important that neither of you is ever left wondering if the other person still cares as much as you do.
4. Make Time for Skype Dates
As convenient as texting is, it can only go so far. Don't forget to set aside time to talk to each other over Skype, FaceTime, or some other app where you can not only hear your significant other, but also see them. There's nothing better than seeing your significant other after a long day.
5. Support Each Other
You may be apart, but that doesn't mean you can't be there for your significant other. It may be an upcoming test, a stressful day, or a freak out because one of you has no idea what you want in life, but regardless, you should try to be there for each other and help them work through it.
6. Don't Be Afraid to Have a Life Outside of Them
Let's be honest here. Your relationship isn't going to be the "typical" college relationship. You aren't going to be able to go to parties with your significant other, or go out to casual dates to the cafeteria for lunch. In order to maintain your sanity you need to have friends and a life where you are.
7. Don't Be Afraid to Take Some Time For Yourself
Even if you're in a relationship, you're still in school. Sometimes you have to tell your significant other that you need a break in communication to study for a test, do your homework, or even just take a few hours to watch a show and unwind.
8. Cherish the Time You Have Together
You may only have one or two days together after months of being apart, but any time you can spend with your significant other is precious. Instead of complaining about how little time you have together, look forward to the time you can be together and don't waste it.
9. Don't Give Up!
No one ever said this would be easy, and sometimes you just feel like giving up, but be patient, keep pushing through, and soon enough you'll be back in your loved one's arms. There's nothing more toxic to a long distance relationship than to stop trying.
Good luck!
