9 Things You Should Know Before Moving Out

Moving out of your parents’ house is a major milestone in life. Maybe you’re moving into a college dorm, or signing your first lease, or maybe you’re even buying your first house. Regardless, it’s a huge life-changing event that comes with newfound independence and many responsibilities. You definitely start to learn very quickly that some things you've always taken for granted are actually a part of everyday adult life.

1. The dishes don’t put themselves away.

Dishes can be the biggest pain in the butt. I’m pretty sure it’s the number one chore that everyone hates. You’re probably going to go though a lot of paper plates and plastic silverware in order to avoid dirty dishes.

2. Neither does the laundry.

Folding and putting away your clothes is so time consuming. But if you never fold the clothes in the dryer, then you can’t switch the clothes from the washer over, which results in having to rewash them due to the musty smell of 2-day-old wet clothes (guilty).

3. You have to change your own toilet paper.

You ever use the bathroom and then look over and find there’s no toilet paper, so you have to yell to your parents to bring you some? Those days are over, and if you forget to change it yourself, well then you’re SOL... Literally.

4. The garbage does not take itself out.

Unless you want garbage piled up to the ceiling, you’re going have to be in charge of taking it out every week.

5. Make sure you stock up on the essentials.

Nothing is worse than running out of toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. and not having any back up.

6. Be prepared to spend over $200 at the grocery store in the first week.

Every time you get home from Kroger, you’ll remember 10 things that you forgot to get no matter how many lists you made before you left. As the first few weeks go on, you’re going to continuously find things you still need.

7. Brace yourself for lots of mac & cheese and bagels.

Although you’d like to think you’re going to start cooking your own steak dinners, you’ll realize shortly that you’re not a chef and that these things take time. Stock up on Ramen Noodles, Easy Mac, and other quick meals to start you off.

8. Bills are not cheap.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll sit in complete darkness before you rack up that electric bill.

9. You’ll probably visit home often.

Whether it be because you miss your family, your dog, or you just want a home cooked meal because you’re tired of all your failed attempts at being Betty Crocker, home is where the heart is and you’ll miss it more than you know.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
