Nine Things I Want My Little Sister To Know

1. I don’t hate you.

I know there are countless times that we have exchanged this phrase, but I need you to know that I don’t hate you. It’s the opposite, actually. I have more love for you than I do for anyone else in the world, and I hope you know it.

2. You are beautiful.

Too many times I have listened to you criticize yourself and put yourself down, and you need to know that you are beautiful, inside and out. Your forehead is not too big. It’s perfect. You don’t have too many freckles. Your hair looks fine: curly, wavy or straight.

3. Love hurts, and it will happen a lot.

I’ve been here through all of your relationships, and I am here to tell you that love hurts. Bad. I know you think that the pain will never go away and that you must have done something wrong, but it will and you didn’t. Your Prince Charming is somewhere out there, and one day you will find him. You just need to be patient.

4. People are going to talk about you.

No matter what you do in life, people are going to find something to talk about. Whether it be good or bad, your name will always find its way into someone’s conversation. All you can do is keep your head held high and your morals even higher. Nice people don’t always finish last.

5. I will always be your No. 1 fan.

No matter what you do, I will support you. Even if you decide to drop out of high school and be a balloon artist, I will support you. From the day you were born until the day one of us dies, I was, and always will be, your No. 1 fan.

6. Friends, boys and people in general will come and go.

Pay attention. The people you associate with now, more than likely, will not be a part of your life one day. More than likely, they won’t be part of it after high school. People change. You will too.

7. I will always be your best friend, and you will always be mine.

No explanation needed.

8. I LOVE YOU.

I know sometimes it may be hard to believe, but I do love you. One day you will truly know how much, but for now, I’ll settle just for you to know that I do.

9. Never let anyone define your happiness.

Forgive. Holding onto things that other people have done is only going to hurt you in the end. No one in this world holds the key to your happiness but YOU. Use that key wisely.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
