9 Stereotypes About Sorority Girls

Being in a sorority can be challenging with all the different stereotypes. Most people assume all sorority girls do in college is get drunk and party. Being apart of a Greek organization like a sorority is so much more than getting drunk and partying, it's a bond that you have with all the other sororities and fraternities. We're there for each other and hold each other accountable around campus. These are a few of the stereotypes we hear when we say "I'm greek."

1) "You're paying for your friends"

This is FALSE. Yes, I pay dues to my organization monthly but that's so we can do fun things like sisterhood events and it's also to take care of our house.

2) "Sorority girls are dumb"

Some of you may not be aware but each house has a different GPA they have to obtain every semester. If we don't reach this goal as a whole our chapter will be put on social probation (which means we can't have swaps, formals, etc.). If the house reaches their required GPA but as an individual you don't you'll be put on probation alone and not get to attend anything.

3) "All sorority girls do is party"

Again this is a false statement. Being in a sorority is so much more than partying, most of us are very passionate about our philanthropy and try to live out our purpose. Don't get me wrong, we do go out but it isn't every weekend or every night like some people assume. We also care about our grades so for some of us "Thirsty Thursday" isn't an option.

4) "But don't they haze you?"

No, we do not get hazed, hazing is taken very serious and if you even feel a little threatened you tell someone and the problem is confronted immediately. You also sign a contract that says the sorority can't haze you.

5) "All sorority girls are girly"

Most chapters have a variety of unique girls. There are different girls in every sorority thats's what makes them unique. Imagine having 80 other people just like you in one house...how boring would that be?

6) "Sorority girls have everything handed to them"

No no no, if you think this you'll be surprised to hear that most sorority girls have jobs and Daddy doesn't pay for it. Shocker right?

7) "Sorority girls only date Frat guys"

Most of the girls in our chapter have boyfriends that aren't in a fraternity. Now frat boys can be very cute and tempting but most of the time they're trouble. All the girls I know would rather date a boy not in a Fraternity and be treated right then wind up being cheated on because he got too drunk at a party. P.S. still love frat guys they make great friends and dates most of the time but that's it.

8) "Sorority girls always have to look their best"

We do like to look our best most of the time, but going to class I can promise you we all look homeless. Wearing our letters is a big deal because we worked hard to get to that point so no we don't want to look trashy when we're in letters; but going to class you can find us wearing Norts, over sized t-shirts and our hair in a messy pony tail.

9) "Sorority girls only talk to their sisters"

We do talk to our sisters and hang out with them a lot but we're also friends with girls from different sororities too. I mean, who doesn't love Pan love?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
