9 Stages Of A Snowstorm To A West Coaster, As Told By "Friends"

Growing up in Los Angeles, the beach was always comforting – there for sunsets, a nice view when you’re stuck on PCH, and a good conversational stereotype. I’d think that to an east coaster, snow serves a similar purpose. I’m by no means shocked to walk outside and see a white blanket covering every visible surface; no, no…not at all. But I will never understand an east coaster’s nonchalance about the environmental anomaly. Now (knee) deep into my second winter in Philadelphia, I’ve discovered a few things: mainly that a little bit of cold weather never hurt anyone. I know every Californian has gone through these 9 stages of a budding snow-mance.

1. Coming to terms with the fact that shorts won’t be needed for another 4 months.

2. Complete and utter shock, followed by questioning every person you see, “have you seen the snow?!”

3. Appreciation for the distraction from your 9 AM lecture.

4. An insatiable desire to spend every waking moment frolicking in Earth’s closest thing to Narnia.

5. Excitement when your friends agree to walk to dinner instead of order in.

6. Your newfound love for your Netflix account.

7. An unstoppable word vomit of every other time you’ve been in snow.

8. Grateful for your classes being cancelled so the “Snarty” called can ensue.

9. And lastly, knowing that you will always be involved in a snow-mance, no matter how many years you live on the opposite coast.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
