If you're anything like me, you know that college can be tough when it comes to meeting new people. You'll make amazing friends, ones who you share bonds with that you haven't with anyone else, but deep down, you'll always be searching for people who remind you of your friends from home. After the trial-and-error of finding the perfect fit for people who just get you, your hometown friends have stuck through it all. Here are a few reasons why I, and I'm sure many others, are thankful to have built-in sisters and the best friends to come home to.
1. They have the most embarrassing stories about you.
To put it simply, they have WAY too much dirt on you to ever stop being their friend. Whether it was your fashion mishaps in middle school or your first drunken escapade, they can tell the story better than you can. Which is dangerous to say the least. Don't let them stray too far.
2. The group message is home for sharing every insignificant event.
Since you grew up with these friends through the era of texting, it's obligatory that you have to fill them in on everything that is happening. Even if the kid who sits next to you in class smells, or you just really wish you were eating your favorite hometown food, you feel like you have to let them know. Especially if you're far away from them, this seems like the most sensible way to feel as though you're still with them.
3. They have been there through the best times.
Whether it was your high school graduation or the day you got your license, you have watched each other grow into adulthood.
4. They have stuck by you through your ugly phase.
If your friends are still here after the feather hair extension phase AND the colored skinny jean trend, they're real. Don't forget it.
5. They're the only ones who appreciate when you send screenshots about people you know from high school.
Someone got arrested? Screenshot. Someone you thought would never find a significant other updated his or her relationship status? Screenshot. From subtweets to snapchats, there's always a reason to show your friends. They're the only ones who will appreciate them the way you do.
6. They have heard your parents yell at you.
Your parents may have also yelled at them when they needed it. After spending so many years in the carpool lane and at family dinners after school, your crew is basically a part of your family. This means they know all the ins and outs of how to persuade your 'rents, as well as how to get what they want out of you.
7. They supported you through your ugly phases.
I don't even think this needs explaining. If they can't love you at your worst, they don't deserve you at your best. Shout out to the day one's for being there through both.
8. They don't buy into your lies.
Your college friends might believe you when you say "I'm just tired," "I'm fine," or "It's no big deal," but your hometown friends know you better than that. They don't believe any of your fake excuses, so you can always be totally honest with them.
9. When you get back together, it feels like no time has passed.
When you get your friends back together after weeks or months apart, you pick up right where you left off. Distance and time put no strain on your relationship because you know they will always have your back at the end of the day.
