While I will always adore the Disney princess movies like The Little Mermaid, Mulan and Cinderella, Disney has also made a resonating impact through its less royal counterparts. Don’t get me wrong, all those princess stories and happy endings are great, but there is no doubt that Lilo and Stitch was hands down the realest and most relatable Disney movie of all time.
1. Lilo and Stitch broke Disney's shell, portraying its characters with a more realistic body image.
In a world where we feel pressured to conform to society's rules and roles, Lilo and Stitch proved that we have no obligation to do such a thing. Nani is curvy with thick thighs and an athletic build, which she shows off in the surfing montage; more importantly, Nani is not ashamed or insecure about her body, nor was she a damsel in distress. Lilo is a bit chubby, but this, of course, is common among young children.
2. Lilo is a brat sometimes, and it's refreshing.
Let's be realistic here: all kids throw temper tantrums and act over-dramatically. It's a natural part of being young, just ask your parents!
3. Lilo is different from everyone else.
Even her doll is strange! But it was okay because Lilo loves her stitched up green doll just as much as all the other girls love their Barbies. Lilo is the outsider on the island, which resonates with kids in the audience who have been in her shoes.
4. Stitch (obviously) is also different.
Over the course of the movie, Stitch teaches Lilo the importance of being unique and that it shouldn't matter what other people think about you as long as you love yourself.
5. Stitch isn't your average furry Disney sidekick.
He is an oddly cuddly yet grumpy killing contraption. Remember when Stitch ravages San Francisco?
6. There is no such thing as eating too much!
None of the characters, especially Stitch, have any shame when it comes to eating food. The alien eyeball dumplings in Lilo & Stitch 2 are a huge hit during family fun night.
7. Lilo and Stitch are the dynamic duo.
The two of them have an instant connection when they met. Not only are they adorably perfect for each other, Lilo and Stitch prove that even the closest of friends will fight.
8. Nani and Lilo prove that family is of the utmost importance.
Also that sisters may be the most annoying people in the world, but we still love them no matter what. Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.
9. Lastly, it wouldn't be Disney's best movie without the incorporation of Elvis!
I mean come on, who doesn't love The King of Rock and Roll?
To my favorite Disney duo, I will always be stuck on you!
