he developers at Ubisoft took a risk by adding an extra protagonist in the Assassin's Creed series, a female no less. The game features twin assassins Jacob and Evie Frye. In a community where there aren't a load of games that feature a female protagonist, Ubisoft took the risk and succeeded. After playing the game, I have 9 reasons Evie Frye is better than her twin Jacob Frye to celebrate the ninth installment of the Assassin's Creed series in no particular order.
1) Stealth- Evie Frye is the queen of stealth. She walks/runs quietly and can get even quieter as the game progresses. You can increase her proficiency with the throwing knife and her signature move is turning invisible while stationary once you level her up enough. I wish I could be invisible while stationary; I wouldn't have to do any chores if my parents can't see me.
2) Invisibility- Like I said, she can turn invisible. The Blighters will come up close and she will assassinate them with her hidden blade and go back to being invisible. You might want to work on your hearing, or you'll be dead if you get on her wrong side.
3) The Cane Sword- When you first get your chance to control Evie, she wields a Cane-Sword which is exactly what it sounds like. You can draw a sword out of the cane and kill someone with both. If the sword is a favorite weapon of yours, if you search long enough, you can craft a dragon cane sword, which is bright orange. It's beautiful and deadly, much like Ms. Frye herself.
4) Freeing Children- Sorry to be conforming to stereotypical roles that a woman plays, but in the game, you meet a young girl named Clara, who tells you that the Blighters have children working in their factories for little pay and she'll help you if you free them. Evie agrees to the terms and both spit in their palms and shake hands. As a stealthy assassin, Evie is better suited going to the factories, assassinating the Blighters inside and freeing the children without being spotted.
5) First rule of fight club...- Sorry Fight Club, this time the first rule is expect Evie Frye to break your arm. If you use her in the various fight clubs in Victorian London, her knock out move is usually breaking their arm, their leg, or both if she feels like. She'll even take two people out by getting two dazed enemies to face each other, then kick one in the back of the head into the other. Jacob may be the strength to Evie's stealth, but it's much more enjoyable to see Evie crack bones than Jacob.
6) Customization- Depending on how many pressed flowers you can collect, you can change the color of what the assassins wear. Do you honestly thing that Jacob can pull off a purple outfit? Probably not.
7) The romance with Assassin Henry Green- The whole game, you can tell there is something going on between she and Green. They often work together to find the Piece of Eden that they are looking for and Green always seems happiest when working with her rather than Jacob. We need a fanfic pairing those two ASAP.
8) Portrayal as equal- The game is quick to let you know that she and Jacob see each other as equals. They're equal in height and in missions and each have their own key assassinations to advance the story. Neither puts each other down and they even bicker with each other at the same frequency.
9) Straying from the stereotype- Finally, at the end of the game, she has to be a part of a dance with the leader of the Blighters and she has to wear a dress because it's a formal event. She says that she hates wearing dresses, which is good to hear. She calls the one she has to wear at the ball an "infernal contraption." Gamers want a lead female protagonist to stray from societal gender norms and of the female gamers I know, none of them particularly like dressing up, either.
Jacob is a great character too. He's very fun to play and if you want to go into a fight head on, Jacob is your man. Despite that Evie is just a sliver bit better. She's a personal favorite of mine, not to mention, she can turn freaking invisible! How cool is that?!
