I've been in college for almost three full years now. That's nearly six semesters of living away from home and trying to figure out how to be an adult. Even though I don't see my parents as often as I used to, that doesn't mean I don't get to talk to them. I probably call my parents more than I need to, but I know they enjoy hearing from me. The reasons behind the calls can vary, but here are just a few:
To tell them about my day.
Sometimes it's a simple phone call to catch up and tell my parents about how my day or week is going. Checking in with them every once in a while just to brighten their day is sometimes all that needs to be done.
When my car breaks down and I need my dad to help me.
I don't know about you, but my car is old. I'm talking nearly as old as I am old, and when things get old, they begin to break down. My car is at the point where after one thing gets fixed, something else immediately breaks. I am always calling my dad to tell him about the new weird noise my car is making.
To tell them about all the juicy gossip.
I probably am too close to my parents, but when there is a bit of really good drama going on, they will be receiving a phone call from me telling them all about it.
To vent.
Sometimes things just aren't going your way and you just really need someone to talk to that really gets you. My parents are my number one go-to when I really need to talk to someone about a problem that I'm having.
When I feel like I might actually be dying of salmonella poisoning and need to know whether or not I should see a doctor.
Like most college students, I am not very keen on seeing a doctor unless it is actually serious, like a broken bone or something crazy. The best person to diagnose whether it is serious enough to see a doctor is of course my mom.
To tell them how I almost got hit by a car again!
This happens more often than you'd think, but it always gets a laugh out of them.
To brag about a good grade.
Nothing pleases parents more than hearing that you are excelling at school. Whenever I get a good grade back, I always make a call to my parents to tell them of my accomplishments.
To ask for advice.
When you don't know how to deal with your crazy roommate or what kind of laundry detergent works best for casual slacks, your parents are just a phone call away
To say thank you.
In college, you see a lot of things happen and think to yourself, "I am so lucky my parents raised me right." I just have to call and make sure they know how appreciative I am that they forced me to do chores growing up so that I know how to live on my own like the responsible adult that I am.
As annoying as it is that I sometimes call my parents multiple times a day, I know that they know I only do it because I love them.
