9 Things I Have Learned In 2016

2016, you have brought me so many great, sad, happy, depressing, exciting, and nerve-wracking moments in my life, and I sincerely thank you for all of them.

1. People come and go in your life, even when you least expect it.

I have lost friends, but have also gained friends, thanks to college. Life brings you people in your life for a reason. They could be in your life for a couple of weeks, a couple of years, or even ten years. I have always tried to remember that everyone is/was in my life for a reason.

2. How in love I am with Sephora.

I friggin love makeup. That’s all.

3. I have depended more on coffee more than I ever have in my entire life (especially since college.)

I love my morning coffee, but in college, I have my morning, mid morning, afternoon, and late afternoon cup of coffee (okay maybe not that excessive but you get the point.)

4. Beyoncé is truly Queen B.

When I am jamming by myself to “Sorry” (the ultimate, best breakup song) in the car or when I am studying or having a concert in the shower, Beyoncé is always there to make me feel more confident and sure of myself.

5. Family is always there.

I was very sick near the end of the semester, and my mom was always there to come pick me up from school. She always has put me first, and I never realized that until college. Love you mom.

6. Tests aren’t everything.

Yea, I definitely failed a few tests in my senior year of HS, but they didn’t prevent me from getting into a great college! So basically, it’s okay that you fail a few things. It happens. ( Just don’t fail too many quizzes/tests because your GPA is pretty freaking important.)

7. Don’t drink water/ foods off the side of roads in third world countries.

I went to Costa Rica this past April, and I got extremely sick near the end of the trip. I ate a passionfruit that was from a local fruit stand on the side of the road. Note: you shouldn’t eat fruit that isn’t washed, especially if it is in a foreign country. After getting an infection in my stomach, I have now learned and remembered that whenever I travel abroad, don’t eat strange fruit that hasn’t been cleaned!

8. Having acrylics can change your mindset.

I have always been a lover of acrylic nails, but this year has proven to me that the longer my nails are, the more badass I feel.

9. Did I already mention Beyonce?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
