1. Fall and Winter become one
The seasons kind of clash in Colorado, so at times fall may seem like winter and winter may seem like fall. That’s just how it is.
2. You’re prepared for anything
We have to be prepared for it to be 80 degrees and sunny one day to 30 and snowing the next (like this past week for example). So in our cars, there is always an extra winter wiper thing, jackets, blankets, and any other warm supplies you can think of. Colorado is unpredictable.
3. Your wardrobe is as versatile as your car
While you were wearing shorts yesterday, there is no short supply of fuzzy socks, baggy sweaters and boots for you to wear when the weather gets cold.
4. Snow days come when you least expect it
My school district has had some weird standards when it comes to pick snow days. We had like 3 last year, maybe 4. One of them was completely pointless but it was because the newscast claimed a blizzard was coming and everyone was taking precautions way too far ahead of time. The other 2 were in a row during finals. Let’s just say all the high schoolers rejoiced together. But there have been times where we are all hoping for a snow day and the weather is bad enough for one, yet we still have to shovel the driveway and get to school. It’s a 50/50 chance every blizzard.
5. It gets dark
I’m sure after daylight savings time, most everywhere in the world experiences this much too early darkness. I get home from school and the sun starts to set. Really it just brings all my motivation down with it. Who really wants to do homework after the sun has already set? My body is telling me it’s time for bed.
6. Your street never gets plowed
It never fails, no matter what time of the year it snows, the snow plow people do not care about my street. Sometimes they don’t even bother to plow the main street of our neighborhood. It’s like they drive past and are like “Nah, this street should be fine, it’s facing the sun.” No. Our street is not fine, but we will continue to drag our cars through a foot of snow to get out of the neighborhood thanks. Or come up with other ways to get around, like the person on skis above.
7. You know how to shovel the driveway (and maybe even enjoy it)
Sometimes you have to fend for yourself in the snowy weather. Your parents might have already left for work in a hurry and only shoveled their area, or maybe you just love shoveling the snow. Either way, you have extra shovels and the skills to get it done as quickly as possible. Or, if you’re a veteran, you have a snow blower. Sometimes you can even make it a game by racing to see how fast you can get it done.
8. Snow isn’t that exciting
Sure, the first snow of the season might bring a small bit of excitement, until you realize it marks the beginning of winter and more snow to come. Snow is only pretty if it happens overnight and there isn’t enough of it to stick to the ground. Then it’s perfect because the roads don’t become a slick black ugly mess and the sun still sparkles off the snow in the grass and on the rooftops.
9. Cozy Days
In the end it's always nice to snuggle up with fuzzy socks, a warm blanket, and some hot cocoa and enjoy the excuse to stay in for a while.
