Everyone knows about the Western Civ program before they decide to come to Providence College, but I don’t think any freshman is truly mentally prepared for the two and a half hour struggle that is Civ seminar. No matter what time of the day seminar occurs, you either have to have dangerous levels of caffeine in your system or be sitting next to the professor in order to remain conscious throughout the entire block. The only saving grace is that we all suffer collectively, and everyone can empathize with the hardships faced by the poor freshman who have 8:30 Civ seminar. Here are a few trademark seminar moments, as told by Fresh Prince of Bel-Air:
When the Professor Asks your opinion of last night’s reading and you stall and contemplate an answer like you actually read it
When you wake up ten minutes before seminar in the same clothes you wore out last night and you have no time to change
When you show up late and you know everyone is judging you
When you look at the clock and realize its only been 20 minutes
When you try to take notes but the discussion is going way too fast
When you’re so tired you have to keep your eyelids open manually
When you fall asleep and the person next to you disturbs your slumber
When you’re tuned out and your professor asks for your opinion
When you and your friend both make intelligent contributions to the discussion
When your class convinces your professor to move the essay due date back a day
When your professor tells you the thesis for your Civ paper is unclear
When you have to read the entire “Confessions of St. Augustine” in one night but your friends are going out
When you finally decide to stop dressing up for class and let the haters hate
When you skip a seminar and spend the morning in your PJs
When you realize you forgot to submit your essay on Sakai
When you realize you need to re-evaluate your own startling lack of effort
When you finally step outside into the light two and half hours later
