In honor of Women’s History month, I think everyone needs a list of badass women they can gain inspiration from, not just for March, but all year round! So here is a list of women who are absolutely ~~flawless~~ on a day to day basis.
Laverne Cox
In addition to playing Sophia Burset on one of the BEST SHOWS EVER Orange Is the New Black (seriously if you haven’t seen it already, get on it), Laverne Cox is a passionate LGBTQ activist. She is the first transgender actress to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy in an acting role, and can be seen travelling around the country delivering a speech entitled “Ain’t I A Woman?” Not only is she an amazing actress, but she is an amazing person and effective activist.
Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi is a long time activist for democracy and peace in Myanmar. In 1988 she began to lead mass movements against the oppressive political regime, and was subsequenty placed under house arrest. In 1991, she received a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts. After her release from house arrest in 2010, she gained a parliamentary seat in the opposition party, and is now the President through democratic election!
Malala Yousafzai
Malala’s name is known all over the world as an amazing girl’s education activist. While growing up in Pakistan under the threat of the Taliban, she refused to stop going to school simply because she was a girl, and spoke out for her sisters in the country. For that, the Taliban raided her school bus and shot her in the face. But you obviously can’t silence Yousafzai, because since she has become an international activist, established the Malala Fund for girls education, and authored a book (which has become a movie) detailing the incident called I am Malala.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
NOTORIOUS RBG. Not enough can be said about this amazing, amazing woman. The amount of glass ceilings she has broken is insurmountable. She was one of 9 women in her Harvard Law class, and was the first woman to be on both the Harvard Law Review and Columbia Law Review. Oh, and she was first of her class. She spent her entire life tirelessly fighting for women’s equality, co-founding the Women’s Right Project at the ACLU and serving as it’s chief litigator. The second woman appointed Supreme Court Justice in 1980, she has been defending the rights of American citizens, especially women, ever since. Favorite quote? When asked how many women should be on the Supreme Court, “Nine.”
Emma Watson
This woman is not just Hermione Granger anymore. She is appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and launched HeForShe, a campaign involving men directly with the issue of gender equality. Making a now very famous speech at the UN Headquaters, she said “If not me, who, if not now, when?” BEST FUN FACT IN THE WORLD: Malala Yousafzai decided to call herself a feminist after this speech. OMGOMGOMG
Kirsten Gillibrand
Kirsten Gillibrand is a Democratic Senator from New York who acquired her seat after Hillary Clinton left office. She has been continually outspoken on the issues of women’s and girl’s rights and equality in America. One of the programs she launched, OffTheSidelines, encourages the involvement of women and girls in politics, and works to elect women into public office. It also works to make women involved and passionate about things like campus sexual assault, military sexual assault, and launching an economic plan give women equal access to the American economy.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
One of the greatest feminists and authors EVER. She grew up in Nigeria, and moved to the United Stated to pursue her studies. After graduating with a Masters in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins and then with a Masters in African Studies from Yale University, she went on to write poems, short stories and novels that gained international acclaim. My personal favorite, We Should All Be Feminists, is now given to EVERY 16 year old in Sweden. Not to mention she gets an amazing feminist cameo in Flawless by Beyonce, taken from her Tedx Talk, “We Should All Be Feminists.” Needless to say I will be jamming to that daily throughout March.
Wangari Maathai
Wangari Maathai is a Nobel Peace Prize winner for her leadership within the Green Belt Movement, an environmental and feminist NGO which she of course founded. My favorite story about this awe inspiring woman is when her and other women sat nude in a forest in order to prevent deforestation that was decimating local Kenyan communities and the environment. Want this tree? You have to go through her NUDE BODY for it. Brilliant.
If you are a woman, and feeling downtrodden this month or any point in your life, just think back to your powerful sisters and I’m sure you’ll feel a little better. Happy Women’s History Month!
