8 Ways To Decorate On A Budget

Scrolling through Pinterest leaves the average millennial with serious apartment-envy. While we'd love to have our living spaces look just as swanky and posh, decorating can be expensive. However, all hope is not lost. Check out these eight inexpensive ways to freshen up your apartment and make it a Pinterest-worthy dream.

1. Host a decoration swap with friends

If you feel the itch to redecorate, chances are your friends feel it, too. Organize a decoration swap with friends to trade your old decor in for something new - at no cost! Invite everyone to bring over their old decor, provide some snacks and drinks, and turn an afternoon into a full-fledged decorating party.

2. Add some fresh flowers or succulents

One of the simplest ways to freshen up your apartment is with plants. Flowers are magnificent, but if you don't have a green thumb, stick to succulents: they require much less attention and are easier to care for. To take it up a notch, start your own succulent terrarium.

3. Make wall art out of old maps and vinyl covers

A little wall art is the perfect way to give your apartment some personality. While Urban Outfitters is amazing, it's also a bit pricey for those of us on a budget. The solution? Scavenge local flea markets (check out this one in DC) and thrift stores for old maps and vinyl covers. Not only are they cheap - they're also guaranteed to be completely unique.

4. Rearrange the furniture

Changing up the layout of your living space is one of the easiest ways to create big change for no cost. Invite a few friends over to help you move the big items like couches or beds. It's amazing what a little rearranging can do for your apartment's energy.

5. Lighten up with string lights

Ok, maybe string lights are a little basic. But that doesn't diminish the fact that they're a super cheap way to bring light into any apartment. Available at many stores (and also online at Amazon.com), these cost-friendly lights are the way to go. Buy a few packs, string them up, and be amazed at the difference they make.

6. Put up window treatments

Nothing says "I'm an adult" like hanging curtains or fancy shades in your apartment. Not only do they make you look grown up - they're also cheap. For budget friendly options, try scooping up a set at a discount store like Marshalls or buy your own fabric and make them yourself. Bonus: curtains are amazing at keeping out unwanted light so you can sleep in as long as you please.

7. Shop flea markets for kitchenware

While we all would like to furnish out kitchen from Williams-Sonoma, most of us don't have $200 to spend on a sparking-water maker. For the next best thing, visit local flea markets to find quirky kitchenware that is both adorable and budget-friendly.

8. Change up the living room accents

If the only items on your coffee table are dirty dishes and piles of homework, it might be time to freshen things up. For an easy pop of personality, add some throw pillows (like these lovely ones from Society 6), cute storage options (Modcloth has tons), or coffee table books (it's hard to beat some classic Ansel Adams).

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
