Making a home away from home should not break the bank.

As we all know, college is expensive without the cost of dorm living. We also know that a dorm is not a home without your own personal touches. Decorating can become expensive as well, a $100 rug, $50-$100 worth of pictures, not to mention bedding and cooling systems for those hot, sticky, August and September months. Plus, a college student normally does not have an abundance of money to spend on these, highly important (to some) expenses. If you are like me and love decorating but is also working on a budget, here are some tips to get exactly what you want without completely breaking the bank.

1. Do not under any circumstances pay full price for anything.

Places such as Hobby Lobby and Joanne's Fabric have apps which normally have coupons. Hobby Lobby is notorious for their 40% off one regular item coupon. Also, don't be afraid to take your mom shopping and download the app on her phone. There is nothing that says you cannot split the purchases up to save more money!

2. Online shopping

Places like Pottery Barn and Bed Bath and Beyond give promo codes for your first purchase with only an email address, no account needed! These codes range from 10%-20% off, to Free Shipping.

3. Student discounts exist for a reason, definitely ask about them!

There are many places that will give a student discount with a valid school I.D. Kate Spade gives 15% with I.D. If you aren't sure if a discount is given there is no shame in asking!

4. DIY

If you are crafty then DIY projects can provide a cheaper way of getting exactly what you want. I am not the most artistic person but I can sew, so, I recently made pillows that were exactly what I was looking for, for less than half of what I would have bought them for! SCORE!

5. Christmas lights

Everyone wants the string, fairytale lights to hang on walls and ceilings, BUT, normal Christmas lights give the same amazing lighting effect as the string lights that are $20 more expensive.

6. Duvet covers

Comforters wear and tear and can be expensive only for the contents to become less comfy with every wash. Go for the duvet and insert option, they can still be a little pricey, but the insert stays the way you bought it while the cover gets washed.

7. Pinterest

Pinterest is a great place to find cool, artsy things to mimic. I found a dorm layout that I loved and have been putting my own spin on the decor one item at a time.

8. Do not buy anything too big until you get into your room and make sure it has a place

I bought a picture last year and had to send it home because the wall turned out looking too cluttered. Sometimes it is best to wait it out.

I hope this helps to save some money making a tiny dorm room a home. Being away from home can be hard but living in a space that you created yourself and that you love, makes the distance a little easier.

Happy Shopping!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
