It’s that time of year again! It’s time to head to your local movie theater to watch the movies that have been teased to us for quite some time now. There are hundreds of movies coming to the big screen this year, but I have compiled a list of the ones I found to be most exciting.
Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do. There is something so exciting about smelling the freshly-made popcorn, getting a cold beverage, sitting down in the cozy seats (with hopefully no one in front of you, so you can prop your feet up), and relaxing to a really good movie.
Here are eight movies coming to theaters this year:
"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising"—May 20, 2016
The highly-anticipated sequel to 2014’s "Neighbors" welcomes back Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Rose Byrne. In "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," a handful of well-known actors and actresses are joining forces to bring the hilarious comedy to the big screen. It should be interesting to see how the Radners handle a sorority this time.
"Alice: Through the Looking Glass"—May 27, 2016
"Alice: Through the Looking Glass" is the another sequel on the list. In 2010, "Alice in Wonderland" sold over $1 billion at the box office. This sequel, also produced by the amazing Tim Burton, stars Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway. What will Alice get herself into when she returns to the Underworld?
"Finding Dory"—June 17, 2016
She's back, and this time, it's all about her. The highly anticipated sequel to the worldwide critically-acclaimed "Finding Nemo" picks up right where they left off over 13 years ago. Set six months after the ending of "Finding Nemo," we get to see all of Dory's backstory. Who isn't excited to hear Ellen DeGeneres' voice again?
"The Shallows"—June 24, 2016
Starring Blake Lively, "The Shallows" is about a young surfer who gets attacked by a great white shark while surfing alone at a secluded beach. What makes this movie look terrifying is the idea of having to get back to shore with the shark circling around you. What would you do?
"The Purge: Election Year"—July 1, 2016
The third installment to "The Purge" series is set to hit the big screen on July 1, 2016. "The Purge: Election Year" brings the same horrifying yearly event to us once again. This time, it is all about revenge. With all of the political talk recently, "Election Year" should be even more intense.
"The Legend of Tarzan"—July 1, 2016
For anyone who has missed the story of Tarzan, this movie should be for you. "The Legend of Tarzan" brings back the story, but with an entirely different feel. The live-action movie, starring Alexander Skarsgard, brings a different element and story to the legend that is Tarzan.
" Suicide Squad"—August 5, 2016
On August 5, 2016, we will finally get to see all of the hype following "Suicide Squad." With an all-star line up of cast members such as Jared Leto as The Joker and Will Smith as Deadshot, we will get to see these anticipated characters join together for revenge. Who are you most excited to see as your favorite Marvel character?
"Deepwater Horizon"—September 30, 2016
This film is based on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion that occurred on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. Many know this disaster as the BP Oil Spill, which became the largest environmental disaster in U.S. History. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as Mike Williams, who worked inside the Deepwater Horizon when it exploded. This movie should be one we talk about for a while after it gets released.
