I love Disney so much and I pride myself on the fact that I've seen almost every animated Disney and Pixar movie and I know way too many facts on them. However, as much as I love the more popular films such as "The Lion King" or "The Little Mermaid" there are a whole collection of Disney films that aren't talked about and sometimes forgotten that really don't deserve to be forgotten about.
1. "A Bug's Life"
You probably watched this as a kid, and it's a fantastic movie, but it's often forgotten about. It was Pixar's second movie after "Toy Story," but it's never gotten to the same level of fame that "Toy's Story" has. It's a great movie with entertaining characters and good story telling, as Pixar always has.
2. "The Black Cauldron"
Never heard of it? I'm not surprised. "The Black Cauldron" follows young Taran and Princess Eilonwy through the land of Prydain to stop the Horned King from summoning an army of the undead. The description alone can give a clue as to why this Disney movie is relatively unheard of these days. When it was released the Horned King was deemed to scary for children and didn't do very well in the box office. However if you're up for a less glittery and shiny film along with a sassy 13-year-old princess, "The Black Cauldron" is worth checking out.
3. "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"
You've probably at least heard of "Atlantis," it's slowly gaining popularity as more and more people are realizing how great it is. It has a hugely diverse cast of characters, beautiful animation and at least four strong female characters. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. If you have, go watch it again.
4. "Treasure Planet"
This one is right up there was "Atlantis." If you are unfamiliar, "Treasure Planet" is the story of "Treasure Island," but in space, with aliens and droids and streampunk technology. It has an interesting combination of 2D drawn animation and CGI along with stunning visuals and a great cast (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emma Thompson, Martin Short)
5. "The Rescuers"
"The Rescuers" is a movie from the 70's, which is followed by a sequel that was made in the 90's. It follows mice Miss Bianca and Bernard as they work to rescue children, Penny in the first movie and Cody in the squeal. It is a case of the sequel movie being almost as good as the first.
6. "The Great Mouse Detective"
"The Great Mouse Detective" is basically the mouse version of Sherlock Holmes. If you are a fan of any form of Sherlock Holmes, the references to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character and stories are pleasantly sprinkled through the film. It is a fun film as Basil (Holmes) attempts to stop Professor Ratigan (Moriarty) from taking over the British Mouse Monarchy, and of course assisted by Major Dr. David Q. Dawson (Dr. Watson)
7. "Meet the Robinsons"
"Meet the Robinsons" is a fun futuristic film following Lewis as he is whisked into the future by Wilbur who believes he is the only one who can stop the Bowler Hat Guy. It is filled with comedy and has a very heartwarming ending.
8. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
A lot of people forget that "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" is in fact a Disney film. It was simply released under their Touchstone label. I love it because of the mix of cartoons and live action while following a typical old detective movie plot. And believe it or not, Jessica Rabbit is actually a good strong female character.
