So it begins, move ins. No matter if you are a freshman or a senior, move in days are always rough. From the emotions of leaving family to the frustrations of trying to pack everything you need in your room, we all have struggled. Move ins, especially your freshman year, are a time of learning for everyone involved. Whether you are an RA, a freshman or a parent, everyone takes something away from move ins. Here are 8 things I learned from move ins being an RA!
1. Move ins are stressful... so take it easy.
There are so many things that happen during move ins. You leave your parents. You have to make sure everything is perfect in your room! You have to deal with hundreds of other people trying to move in as well. All of these factors just add to the anxiety of move ins! So remember to breathe and take time for yourself.
2. Try to help others as best as you can.
Move ins are hard on everyone, so if you can make one persons day easier or better by doing something as simple as holding a door or the elevator, the kindness becomes infectious.
3. Your room does not have to be perfect from the moment you get there, but the more you do the more it helps!
You want to remember to take it slow during move ins. It is a very strenuous day and so you do not want to over do it. The more you do in your room during move ins, the homier it is, but remember to not rush!
4. Take care of yourself.
Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, eat and eat healthy. The better you take care of yourself during move ins the easier the transition to classes starting is.
5. Even though it is tempting, try not to take the elevator downstairs.
Through the many trips you take up and down moving in it is tempting to take the elevator. If you can try to only take the elevator up that way the elevator moves faster and move in is a lot less stressful!
6. Talk to your RA.
Having a good relationship with your RA is a great thing to do in college. RA's are here to help you succeed in whatever ways that they can. Make sure you get to know your RA at least a little bit because they just want to make college feel like a second home!
7. Make friends with your neighbors
Your neighbors are a great start to making friends in college especially if it is your first year. Knowing your neighbors is important because it helps the community get along better!
8. At finally have fun!
Remember to have fun during the first day because this is a monumental experience and it is a day you will always look back on. So make some memories!
