1. At a party, you never really know what songs are playing but pretend anyways.
The expression "fake it until you make it" it's hard when a theater kid is at a party where they're blasting anything but Sondheim. Although you listen to music outside of musical theater, whenever you're at a party, they seem to play every song that you have never heard but everyone else has.
2. You spend more money on show tickets than concert tickets.
Plays and musicals are not cheap but you've saved and gone to more shows than concerts and have no regrets. With even more shows coming out and all your friends telling you that you HAVE to see a million things has you buying tickets before you even have the money for them.
3. You can be found early in the morning waiting on long lines to student rush shows instead of sleeping.
Winning the lottery for broadway tickets is never a guarantee so you'll wake up early and wait outside the theater to get the rush price. There are kids who sleep on the street for Fallon, SNL, and Seth Meyers, but you're out waiting to see a masterpiece.
3. When you are near one of your favorite Broadway stars, but your friends don't really know who you're talking about.
Broadway stars aren't nearly as famous as people like Ariana Grande for instance. So you can casually see one of your favorites out and about. To your friends who don't follow the Broadway world, they seem like a normal person. Which is why you're freak out over Laura Osnes drinking at the same coffee place as you can look crazy.
4. You're used to acting everything when singing instead of just listening to a song.
Although you are capable of listening ot music normally, there are always those certain songs that will cause you to recreate full-on dance numbers and have you singing all the parts to "One Day More." There's nothing you can do to avoid it.
5. In English class, you have to read plays that everyone complains about, but you've actually seen and know them.
Plays like "A Street Car Named Desire," "Romeo and Juliet," and "All My Sons" are just part of the many shows that are commonly read throughout a student's career. These are shows that many theater kids have either seen or been in, making it easy for them to pass the class but hard to hear the complaints of other students.
6. When you have your headphones in jamming out people think you're listening to the next great hit instead of songs that make you cry.
More often than not when a quality show tune comes on a person will be recreating the whole scene in their head while listening. Although the world will think you're listening Kanye's new album, you're really listening to "Dear Evan Hansen" and holding back tears as you rock out to "Good for You."
7. Meeting people who like theater who have never been to Broadway fascinate you.
What a concept? someone who loves theater so much but has never been to NYC or any other major theater city to see a show professionally done. They attack you with questions and will say "I'm so jealous" until they pass out. You're the celebrity in that moment.
8. The Tonys cause you stress because you know ticket prices are gonna skyrocket.
Broadway tickets aren't cheap to begin with but once Tony season comes around and everyone who hasn't cared to look at what's playing year round hear brand new hits like "Hamilton" and make it even more impossible for anyone to get tickets. Some people are still waiting to see "Book of Mormon."
