Transitioning to college is a big transition. You're living with new people, eating new food, and navigating a place you hardly know. Throughout college you'll learn a lot, especially during freshman year.

1. Making New Friends Is Easy

In high school, you're to concerned with appearing 'cool,' and you've known everyone at your school for years. Everyone forms cliques, and you rarely ever make new friends. College is the opposite; you strike up small talk with someone, exchange contact info, and BAM! You have a new friend

2. Your Parents Are Actually Pretty Cool

When you're younger, you're too busy being annoyed by your parents to appreciate them. After moving away, you start to miss them and appreciate their calls and visits. You realize your mom will always be your biggest fan

3. Time Management is VITAL

When you don't have 7-8 class periods back-to-back, you realize that you need to find ways to plan out your free time and manage the 20 clubs you joined during the activities fair.

4. Keeping Your Room Clean Is Satisfying

Although your room at home may have constantly been a disaster, in college you get a clean slate and can come prepared with organization tools. You realize that keeping a clean room is simply the mature thing to do.

5. Doing Laundry is Important

Maybe your mom did your laundry while you were in high school or maybe you let it pile up constantly, but come college you keep up with your laundry for both your own sake and your roommate's sake.

6. You Should Always Have a Backup Plan

Sometimes what you plan to do in a day just doesn't happen, and you should be prepared for such occasions. You learn that it's okay to adjust your plan, but it's not okay to give up on something altogether.

7. Exercise Keeps You Sane

Student recreational center classes can be life-saving when it comes to squeezing a workout into the day, you can just show up for 30-60 minutes and follow along with the instructor to get in a great workout. Whether you choose to lift weights, take a yoga or pilates class, or stick to cardio, exercise will help you relieve stress and make you feel happier (via endorphin release).

8. You NEED To Study

Though many classes in high school were passable without studying, it's absolutely necessary to study in college. Professors will expect students to put in work outside of class because most classes only meet for a few hours a week (if that).

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
